ONLY HER
A K2 TEAM, BOOK 5

ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

BLURB
Former SEAL sniper Cody Roberts has returned from Afghanistan with too many demons and a simple wish: to be left alone. Working for K2 Special Services, caring for the war dogs he rescued, playing his guitar—that’s all he wants to do. But Cody is as protective as his nickname, “Dog,” suggests. A man like that can’t sit back when he realizes the beautiful veterinarian next door is being targeted by an unknown enemy.
Riley Austin is desperate to find out who’s poisoning her animal patients, and she’s stunned by her mysterious neighbor’s suggestion that it’s personal. But Cody makes her feel something else, too: a powerful attraction. He insists he’s no good for her, but those haunted eyes and that chiseled body tell Riley that surrendering to their mutual lust is worth the risk. And despite his conditions, she’ll fight to love him just as fiercely as he’ll fight to save her.

Review:

I am going to say that I did enjoy this book. The characters and story were enough to keep me reading once I hooked especially the last few chapters. Both of the main characters were very real and lifelike and it was intriguing to see both work through the things that were causing them problems, both physically and emotionally

However it did take me a little bit to get hooked. I would say that I did get hooked before the 50% mark but it was a slow journey. I'm not sure if it was my mood at the moment or if it was just a slow build so keep that in mind when taking into consideration my review.

Overall it was a good read and one I did not regret spending time with. I will definitely look into reading the rest of the K2 series although this book can be read as a standalone.

EXCERPT
The next morning, Riley sat at her breakfast table, her gaze glued on the house across the street, curious to see her new neighbor. The top half of a body appeared in the bungalow’s kitchen window, and she froze with her coffee cup halfway to her mouth. He was a he! With a grin, she gave a fist pump. Although she couldn’t see his features, the top half of him was built like a freakin’ warrior.

“No drooling, Riley,” she muttered. With a cup in his hand, he stepped onto his porch, wearing a pair of sweat bottoms and nothing else. She drooled.

Then two dogs followed him out, and she sighed. “My cats are going to hate your dogs, so that means we can’t have a hot affair, mystery man.”

The dogs, one of them the ugliest thing she’d ever seen, the other a mixed breed that looked to have some German shepherd genes, stayed at either side of him. Because she was a veterinarian and trained to notice animal behavior, she caught the miniscule hand signal he gave them. Ugly dog and mixed-breed dog bounded down the steps and raced around the yard.

Stupid man. Didn’t he realize they might run into the road and get hit by a car? She had lost more than her fair share of pets recently and didn’t want to see another one die. Damn if she was going to let that happen again.

“Are you crazy?” she yelled at him after going out onto her front lawn. The man gave her body a slow perusal that sent shivers right down to her toes.

“Probably,” he said.

What? Was he admitting he was crazy? She backed up a few steps. He took a leisurely sip of what she assumed was coffee, but who knew, maybe he was drinking booze already. She took another few steps back. Why couldn’t she learn to mind her own business?

“Excuse my curiosity, but was that just a general observation, or was there a reason for your question?”

The humor—was he laughing at her?—in his voice annoyed her. She marched forward. “Has it not occurred to you that your dogs might run into the road and get hit?”

“Yep,” he said.

She waited for more, then continued to wait. Why did the man have to be so freaking hot? Those broad shoulders and his six-pack abs made her want to press her fingers against his chest to see if he was as muscle hard as he looked. Dark brown hair, caramel-colored eyes, a killer body, and a day-old beard made for one potent man. It was the scruff that gave him a bad boy appearance, the kind of bad boy who’d always appealed to her, unfortunately. There wasn’t a soft thing about him, not even in his eyes. They were hard and cold.

“Bah,” she muttered when he remained silent. Waving a dismissive hand, she turned to go back into her house.

“Call them,” he said.

Don’t turn around, Riley. She turned. “What?”

“Call them. The ugly one is Pretty Girl and the black and tan one is Sally. Call them by name.”

Riley glanced up and down the street to make sure there were no oncoming cars. Okay, she’d show him what an idiot he was by playing his stupid game. “Pretty Girl, Sally, come here.” She clapped and crooned to them. They both ran to the edge of the sidewalk, sat their butts on the ground, and swept their tails across the grass. No matter how much she cajoled, they came no farther. Well, that was embarrassing, and the amusement in the man’s eyes grated.

“My bad,” she said as she slinked back to her house. At hearing his low chuckle, she lifted her hand and gave him her middle finger.

Cody cracked a rare smile as he watched the woman until she disappeared inside her house. “Did you just give me the finger, darlin’?”

Kacey Shea is a mom of three, wife, and part-time bookkeeper who resides in sunny Arizona. She enjoys reading and writing romance novels as much as her son loves unicorns, which is a lot.

Synopsis:
Welcome to the Winters Family Series, a sweet and sexy contemporary romance, where family comes first, romance is all around, and plates will be filled with many delicious meals.

Joshua Winters is a math teacher by day, bartender by night.  He's the middle Winters brother, and tends to be a bit of a wild child.  Ten years ago he met the girl of his dreams in algebra class, his junior year of high school.  He tries all of his sexy charm on this unapproachable girl, but then she mysteriously leaves Wilmington and he feels lost.  Now seeing her standing in the bar where he works, he realizes this may be his second chance.

Kenzie Waters grew up a military brat and traveled everywhere while she was growing up.  Since she relocates about every six months to a year she vowed to not make friends and just keep to herself.  When she met Joshua Winters in high school, he managed to crack her tough exterior.  Still guarded, she kept her distance from the cutest boy in high school.  When her father is called for another tour of duty in Afghanistan, her mom moves them back to Arizona to be with family.  Just two months after living back in Arizona, her father comes home injured.  The next ten years, she endures so much, and yet Joshua always stayed in the forefront of her mind.

Now, Kenzie has made her way back to Wilmington, NC, and hopefully into the arms of the one man who had her heart all along.  Sometimes we fall in love with someone even before we know it.

REVIEW:

Wow, the beginning of the book really drew me in and explained their situations so the readers can easily follow both. It was obvious that both were not ready for a relationship with each other at that time in their life.

I did find that the writing style was slightly difficult to enjoy although not difficult to follow. I'm not sure what about it threw me off but it wasn't my favorite style of writing.

There were several different types of moments, some cute, some hard, others easy. This made the book very life like.

If you're not a big fan of insta-love then I wouldn't suggest You're Mine for your reading but if you don't mind it or really enjoy it then it certainly is a good book.

Excerpt
As she walked out of her office, a flash of movement caught her attention.  She walked up front and saw Joshua sitting on a chair.  He had his head bent, and was looking at his phone.  She stopped and just looked at him, damn he was gorgeous.  Somehow she had to tell him about her degrees, or lack thereof, but how?  She walked towards him, and at the same moment he lifted his head and looked into her eyes.  They both never took their eyes off each other, Kenzie stopped just inches from him.
With just a hint of a smile, “I thought you were heading to The Clam Bake with Izzy and Drew?”
He stood and walked towards her.  Filling the empty space between them, “I decided to wait and walk over with you.  Is that okay?”
“Of course.” She had her hands knotted together, and her thumbs were moving back and forth.  Her head was bent, and she was looking at her hands.
Joshua was only about 4 inches taller than her, so he bent just slightly to look into her chocolate colored eyes.  “You want to talk about what has you distracted?”
She looked up and wanted to just melt into him, smiling, “Not right now, let’s go get a drink.”
He wasn’t going to push, he didn’t know her enough to push.  “Whenever you’re ready, you know I’m here.”
She looked confused, “Why?”
He was a little thrown off by the question, “Why what?”
“Why would you want to be here for me, after all I did to you?  I was horrible to you in high school, and then never bothered to apologize - until ten years later.”  She stopped talking, and turned away from him, then quietly whispered, “Shit, I still haven’t apologized.”
Joshua walked up behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist.  He really could get used to this, the feel of her next to him.  “I’m working on letting go Kenzie, and you should, too.  Only forward, right?”
She leaned her head back onto his chest and let out a deep sigh, “I don’t think I can let go just yet, there are a few things that I need to resolve first.”  She turned into his embrace, loving the way it felt in his arms.  She really hoped he would still want to be near her once he knew about her, and her past.

Kenzie was laughing as she walked into The Clam Bake.  Joshua was behind her, lightly poking her sides and trying to make her laugh.  She suddenly turned and grabbed his hands in hers, “Oh my God, paybacks are a bitch!”
Joshua couldn’t stop smiling, with their hands still joined, he tugged her closer to him.  He whispered for only her ears, “Ya, what’re going to do, spank me?”
Kenzie immediately flushed at his words, “Maybe?”
Joshua pulled her even closer, “I think we have a problem?”
Looking confused, “What kind of problem?”
But before he could answer her question, Izzy hopped over and stuck her head in between theirs.  “Hi there chick-a-dees, you plan on joining us for dinner, or giving the restaurant a show of a lifetime?”
Kenzie pressed her head to Joshua’s chest, her mouth was facing his chest.  With a muffled voice, “What are you doing to me, Joshua Winters?”
Isabel laughed, like full belly laughed, “Sweetie, it’s called the Winters charm…and they’re all freaking hot, of course.”
Joshua wrapped his arms around Kenzie, “My charm and looks have you flustered?  Well now you know what you do to me, every single time you walk into a room.” He whispered in her ear, “You also make it hard for me to walk properly.” He bent and kissed her temple, “Want bourbon on the rocks to calm your nerves?”  Then he poked her side again to get her attention.
She quickly lifted her head to protest, but instead was suddenly lost in his eyes.  Just inches from his mouth, and all she wanted to do was kiss those gorgeous full lips.  Then he smiled, full teeth showing and all, and that was it for her.  She leaned up and kissed him, not a thank you or how are you kiss - it was a kiss that started to heat the whole room up instantly.
When she pulled back, they both had glazed looks, and half grins plastered on their faces.  He pulled back, put his arm around her waist and walked them towards Isabel and Drew.  Isabel was smiling, “I just ordered you both bourbon on the rocks, you need it.”
Kenzie finally found her voice, “Thank you, Izzy.  Did you make it a double?” They all started laughing.
