Making a Play by Victoria Denault Launch Day Blitz!

MAKING A PLAY by Victoria Denault (September 8, 2015; Forever Yours E-Book; Hometown Players: Book 2)
He'll do whatever it takes to winon and off the ice.
Luc Richard is the hottest player in the NHLand it has nothing to do with hockey. His racy relationship with his supermodel ex set the tabloids on fire but nearly put his career on ice. To avoid being traded, Luc agrees to take a break from the spotlight—and from women—and spend the off-season at home in Silver Bay, Maine. It's the perfect plan... until he reconnects with Rose.

Rose Caplan is tired of being shy, sweet, and safe. She's ready for passion, romance—and Luc. Having loved him longer than she can remember, she's finally ready to prove she's not the same innocent little girl he once knew. Off the ice Luc doesn't do games, but this new Rose makes him feel like playing a little dirty. If he's really got a shot at her heart then he's not just playing to win. He's playing for keeps.

Review:
Wow! This book! The hockey season is just gearing up and so I was excited to have this book to help tide me over. And while it's on the off season as well it involved enough hockey to keep me from going crazy.

I do have to admit I love that the author incorporated French in her book. It gave me a chance to practice some french skills and I really loved how Luc just slipped into it as if he didn't think about it. To me that represented a genuineness that I just loved!

Goodness me! These two, I just wanted to smack their heads together and be done with it. They were both frustratingly selfless that I honestly thought that they would never get together, even though I knew it was a Romance novel.

I'm not a huge fan of the first person perspective and that applies to Making a Play as well but Victoria Denault also has a writing style that helped me to not let that affect me and allowed me to enter the story line even if I wasn't a fan of how it was narrated. The characters voices came through loud and clear and certainly kept things interesting no matter what.

Overall, Making A Play was a great read! And I look forward to more from Victoria Denault!

EXCERPT:

Luc looks… predatory.  Hungry.  Like he’s a starving lion and I’m the gazelle that’s about to become his meal.  I’ve never seen him look like this – it’s been close but he’s always held something back – tonight he’s not and it makes my panties damp.
I don’t say his name or acknowledge we even know each other – maybe it’s because I honestly have never met this Luc Richard before.  I just stare at him, my body still moving to the music, somehow unaffected by the shock and turmoil inside my heart.
He splays his big hands flat against my bare, lower back. I cross my wrists behind his head and my fingers can’t help but scrape through his hair. His eyes are barely open now. I lower mine to watch our pelvis’ push and pull and roll against each other.
I want to ask him what the hell he’s doing, but it’s a stupid question.  I know what he’s doing – he’s dry humping me within an inch of my life and pretending it’s dancing.  I just can’t believe he’s doing it to me.
His hands leave my lower back heading in opposite directions.  His right moves up to my neck, his fingers traveling through my hair at the base of my neck.  His left hand moves downward, and he very obviously, very aggressive cups my ass.
Luc Richard is cupping my ass.
Sweet mother of God.
Now I can’t look up.  I don’t want to.  Is he joking around? Is he doing this just to make sure no one else does – as one of his typical, over-protective tactics?
My head turns sideways, my cheek grazing his shirt. My hands slide from his neck and rest on his wide solid shoulders, gripping the muscles there – God he has so many muscles.  His hand on my ass pulls me into him and I grind harder. God help me I want this contact so much.  I’ve wanted it forever.
Then his neck bends forward and his head dips and I feel his lips brush against my cheek and head toward my ear.  He’s going to speak.  I feel his lips part.  He’s going to say something – it’s going to be light and jovial and stupid and it’s going to ruin everything.  This whole charade will come crashing down and I don’t want it to.
So before a word leaves his mouth, I spin.  The movement is fast and unexpected and he stumbles a little as our bodies bump in an effort to reposition themselves.  And then I try to walk away.  I don’t want an explanation or an excuse for what we just did.  I don’t want to know why he did it because his reasons won’t be the same is mine.  He’ll say it was a mistake.  He’ll say he was joking around.  I just need to leave before he can break my heart and my ego - again.
But I only get three small steps before one of his thick arm wraps itself around my ribcage, just below my breasts, and he’s like a brick wall smashed up against my back again.  This time his lips press up against my hair and he gets his chance to speak.
“I’m not done with you,” he growls, his normally slight French accent more prominent.
And then his head moves, ever so slightly and I feel something else on my skin. Just above my collarbone - his lips.  The contact isn’t accidental. His lips aren’t grazing or brushing, they’re pressed firmly to my skin.  They part ever so slightly and then he pulls my tender flesh up into his mouth, sucking softly for a long second before his head moves slowly away.  His lips brush my ear lightly and I swear to God his tongue teases my earlobe.  I start turning around.
I don’t know if he’s turning me or my legs are acting on their own, but suddenly we’re face to face and his head is still bent and his lips are half an inch from mine.  I nervously slide my tongue across my lower lip and his mouth parts slightly.  At first the contact is so light I’m not sure it happened.  Just a brush, a whisper of his lips against mine, and then there is nothing but the muggy air in the room around us.
Luc holds me around the waist and once again pulls my body into his.  Now something else is pushing back into my lower abdomen - something long and solid from between his legs.  He’s hard.
I let out a little gasp.  I can’t help it.  Luc’s hard.  For me.  I made Luc hard.  And as his lips pass by mine again, I tilt my head and stop them.  Capturing them with my own in a solid, scorching kiss.  Our mouths open simultaneously and our tongues reach for each other hungrily.
I’m so overwhelmed by the sensation of his firm lips, his smooth tongue and wet mouth – I feel faint.  I grab at his shirt, pulling him to me like there is a gap between us I need to close, but there isn’t.  His hand on my lower back moves back to my ass and pushes me into him, holding me against him.  His hard length is shamelessly pressed right into me, and I just as shamelessly rotate my hips, purposely rubbing it against my lower abdomen.  Someone bumps us and I have to step back.  Our lips disconnect, our eyes meet and reality crashes down around us.
He looks startled.  Maybe terrified is a better word.  I wish I could grab him and slip back into the erotic dream we were just living but I know I can’t.  So I do the only thing I can - I turn and escape.

Carry My Home by Lia Riley Launch Day Blitz!

CARRY ME HOME by Lia Riley (May 5, 2015; Forever Yours Novella; $0.99)
Love doesn't have to be perfect to be true...
Years ago, Tanner Green loved Sunny Letman. She was meant to be his first kiss, first love, first everything. Then their world spun upside-down and out of control. Free-spirited Sunny doesn't do commitment. Sure, guys are great for a night or a week, but she always leaves first. That is, until professional skateboarder and town golden boy, Tanner Green, unexpectedly walks back into her life.

Despite their broken history, a fragile and undeniably electric connection still holds them together. Now Tanner has to convince Sunny that even though love isn't always perfect, it's worth sticking around for. . .

Excerpt:

Tanner is in the shower when I let myself inside. There’s a wooden rocking chair in the corner. I walk over, sit and close my eyes. He’s naked, soapy, skin flushed from the hot spray. I could join him. He wants me. The space between my legs throbs to the beat of my heart. What’s set in motion between us isn’t going to stop.
I rock, straighten my backbone and focus my attentions. Imagine each breath spiraling through the open door, to the sky, leaving the atmosphere. A quiet prayer. Please. Please don’t let me fuck this up. My hands grip the rocking chair sides hard, hands that ache to touch his wet skin.
The water turns off and he’s out, rubbing a towel over his body.
I’m going for it, can’t help myself.
I tried my best to be my own island.
Turns out my best isn’t nearly good enough.
The door opens and he stands, backlit in a tight white t-shirt and  pair of low slung jeans. His mop of hair is wet, slicked back from his striking face.
“Good, you’re back,” he says. “I didn’t like you out there alone.”
“I was fine, nothing scary outside.”
He frowns, catching my double meaning. “I decided to sleep in the back of my car.”
“No, it’s fine.”
“I don’t mind.”
Of course he doesn’t. He’d sleep on bare concrete if he thought it would be easier for me.
“I get it.” He backs toward the door. “Tonight’s been extreme. You want space. I’ll go--”
“Stop.” I’m in the darkest corner, in this rocking chair throne, the Queen of the Shadows. There’s a great mystery at work. How can my heart be chained to this guy and still feel free?
A bead of water drops from his thick hair and falls to his shoulder. Then another. Tiny wet patches appear on his shirt each time one makes impact. The way he watches me, his gaze writes a secret poem on my skin. “Tell me you don’t want me,” he says. “Say you’re not interested and nothing will happen.”
I want to curl in a ball. Instead, I stand up.
“Sunny,” he whispers, and it’s hard to know if he intends my name as a question or an answer. Funny, the way it sounds like both.
My lids flutter closed of their own volition as he closes the distance. He’s tall enough that when he bends, his face buries into the top of my head. He inhales as if I’m a secret flower. I wish I only ever bloomed for him. A stupid notion. This moment would be perfect if it wasn’t us. If we were other people.
I hook my fingers into his belt loops and do an uncharacteristic fumble, aim too high and brush his stomach instead. His abdominal muscles flex and there’s my cue to explore. I can’t help but inch under the cotton, trace the thick muscles that make up his defined V-line. My nails gently cut to the top of his jeans. His groan vibrates into my skull.
He’s slipping,  less careful with every ragged breath. His skin heats under my fingertips. There’s no choice. There’s never been with him.
I rock into him, hard, and his mouth explodes on mine like a wet, hot grenade. He bites my lower lip and even though I’m scared, I’m not scared of him anymore.

FORGOTTEN SINS(BOOK 1) REVIEW:

I am telling you now that I will be singing this series’ praises. It’s a series that if you love contemporary romance, and suspense than you will love this book. Or if you’re a fan of Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker’s series.

At first I was curious about how everything was working and why they were doing what they did. And as it was revealed….wow just wow. I can’t believe the cruelty of some people. It was just shocking. I think this is why I had such a deep connection with the characters in the series, because of their past and the way they’re trying to move past it while having this timer counting down. That and the way the books were written, drawing you into the characters’ minds, making you understand their natures and finding that there are some people who are just good, honorable people. It gives you hope even as they fight to defeat their enemy.

Josie was a character ,that again had a tragic past so you also find yourself rooting for her to get her happy ending with Shane.

I enjoyed the familial bond that is so clear to see and even the shared pain they have about their brother. The descriptions of this bond just made me connect to each brother and rout for them as the books continue.

The plot was intriguing and unique. It kept the heart pumping and made sure that you were never certain when something was going to happen or when things would calm down a bit.

Overall, Forgotten Sins and the whole Sin Brothers series is a must read.

SWEET REVENGE(BOOK 2) REVIEW:

Due to the fact I loved the first book so much I really was happy to be able to jump right into the second. And especially Matt’s story. I was very interested to see how he ticked in comparison to Shane. And wow, may I just say, several things were different but the sense of honor and family was strong in this book just as it was in the previous book.

I did notice that both Josie and Laney were similar in certain ways, such as their need for safety and insurance, as well as their not so great pasts. But as you get deeper into the books and thus the characters’ heads you discover their differences. It was an amazing journey.

And the plot again kept you jumping, kept you hoping that maybe just maybe, everyone could have their happy ending. You learn more about the enemy of the book and learn just how much you hate him. Believe me, throughout this series I’ve quickly developed more and more feelings towards the brothers as well as the doctor and leader behind their creation.

This book honestly made my heart hurt as I read it. And I think that all of these books are doing the same. It was not only the timer hanging over all the brothers heads that did it but the fact that they’re so against forming connections because of it. That and more glimpses into the past just help you develop more and more feelings towards all the characters involved.

Rebecca Zanetti has created characters that quickly draw you into the book and keep things hopping throughout.

BLIND FAITH(BOOK 3) REVIEW

I think Nate’s story almost hurt more because you know a bit of about his personal past, more than just his shared history with his brothers. It also seemed to hurt more because he was the one on the outside looking in on his brother’s relationships. And wow, the way the emotions described just made me feel very strongly for him.

This story almost seemed to hurt more than the others, if only because of Nate’s thoughts and Audrey’s as well.

But at the same time there was at least a little happiness and fun. And that made the pain a lot more bearable.

It compares well to the series overall. The plot was jumping, pain was had, and even a brief glimpse of happiness was given. But of course there was a cliffhanger. And wow, can I just say I’m going to die while waiting for the next book.

Excerpt:
“Trace, we can’t be seen together right now.”
She jerked her hands away from mine and glared. “Oh no you don’t, Nixon Anthony Abandonato!”
Wasn’t expecting that. I laughed without really thinking, and then she slapped me across the face. It stung like hell. “What was that for?”
“You aren’t leaving me!”
“Did I say I was?” Although my cheek was throbbing I couldn’t  help but keep laughing at her response. And this was why I would never walk away. Who would walk away from such a little pistol?
“Oh.” Trace tugged her lower lip between her teeth and sheepishly looked up at my cheek. “You should probably put some ice on that.” I winced as she touched my cheek.
Covering her hand with mine, I winked. “Yeah, well, I’ve had worse. Promise.”
Her eyes welled with tears, but to her credit she kept them all in. If anything I fell in love with her a little bit more. Her strength was so damn sexy, I couldn’t even put into words what she did to me.
I kissed her softly and sighed against her still chocolate-tasting mouth. “Sweetheart, Chase was . . . well, today he was gifted with a stroke of brilliance. The head of the Nicolosi family talked with us this evening, and he had Phoenix with him.”
I quickly explained to her what had happened, leaving out all the violence, guns, and threats. So basically I censored everything and then dropped the bomb. “You and Chase need to pretend to be together. People will be watching you, they’ll be following you.”
Tracey swallowed and licked her lips. “And you’ll what? Pretend you hate me again?”
“Hell no!” I snapped, grabbing her ass and lifting her until her body was firmly pressed against mine midair. “I’ll just be the friend. Basically, Chase and I are switching parts. He gets to play the boyfriend, I get to play the jackass.”
That earned an eye roll and a laugh from her. I dropped her to the ground and kissed her nose. “If they find out how much you mean to me, they’ll use that against our family and against your grandfather.”
She was silent for a moment. Her hands traced circles around the tattoo peeking out from underneath my white tshirt. The writing was in Sicilian, but it said, “Every Saint has a past, every sinner has a future.” I had always wondered which I was. The saint or the sinner?
It was Trace’s favorite tattoo, even though I had several down my left arm and a few on my stomach and back. Her favorite had always been that one, on the left side of my chest. She said it gave her comfort. I guess she was using it for comfort right now.
“Okay,” she whispered, “I’ll do it.”
I was waiting to feel relieved, but all I felt was tense. My muscles literally tightened underneath her touch the minute the word “okay” had fallen from her perfectly pouted lips.
“I’m going to apologize in advance, though.” Tracey sniffed as a tear ran down her cheek.
“Why are you apologizing?”

Her eyes met mine. “Because I’m going to break your heart.”

Review:

I loved loved loved this book. It was amazing and just as good as the first book, Elite. I already had connections with characters and they just grew throughout Elect.

This book, this book. It hurt me so much. It tore my heart out and honestly I felt like I was dying most of the time while I was reading it. But it felt good. And that is what is weird. Or maybe not so much. You honestly felt that the pain was necessary to get to the happiness and it was not a necessarily good feeling. I’m explaining this really weirdly but I will tell you that Elect will hurt you so much.

It was also interesting to see how the Elect came to be. I didn’t really understand the group fully until the creation story came up. And then it made sense.

And the different perspectives we were given. There were several that honestly changed my opinion on characters. I honestly couldn’t believe some of the feels I had for certain characters that changed throughout the book. It was actually shocking to me. I think I might have annoyed my roommate when I kept exclaiming over my changing feelings.

There are honestly no words to describe Elect or the series so I’ll just sum up with saying that if you’re looking for a book different from the others then you should definitely give this series a peek! You won’t regret it!

Elite Excerpt:

“Are you lost?” a deep voice asked from behind me. I turned around and quickly came face to face with the same guy I’d seen before. Only this time he had three friends with him, not one. Lucky me.
“Nope. Apparently I live in the United States.” I gave him my best smile and tried to lift my heavy suitcase with my free hand. It didn’t budge and I almost fell over. Awesome.
“I’m Nixon.” He moved to stand in front of me. His icy stare did weird things to my body. I’m pretty sure what I was experiencing was called a panic attack. Every part of my body felt hot and then cold, as if I was going to explode any minute.
“Tracey, but everyone calls me Trace.” I held out my hand.
He stared at it like I was diseased.
I quickly pulled it back and wiped it on my jeans.
“Rules.”
“What?” I took a step back.
The guy from before named Chase left the waiting group and approached us. “He’s right. As cute as you are, Farm Girl, someone needs to tell you the rules.”
“Can it be fast?” I asked with an overwhelming sense of irritation. I was tired, jet-lagged, and about five seconds away from crying again. I’d never done public school, let alone a private Elite school where the guys were tattooed, pierced, and better looking than Abercrombie models.
“You hear that, Chase?” Nixon laughed. “She likes it fast.”
“Pity.” Chase winked. “I’d love to give it to her slow.”
I gulped. The two guys behind them laughed hysterically and high-fived each other.
“The rules.” Chase began circling me slowly, making me feel like one of those carcasses vultures feed on. Fantastic.
“No speaking to the Elect, unless you’ve been asked to speak to them.”
“Who are the—”
“Nope. You’ve already broken a rule. I’m speaking, New Girl.” Chase smirked. “Geez, Nixon, this one’s going to be hard to break in.”
“They always are,” Nixon replied, lifting my chin with his hand. “But I think I’ll enjoy this one.”
Okay. It was clear someone had just dropped me into a horror movie where I was going to be offed at any minute.
“If an Elect talks to you, never make eye contact. Because, technically, you don’t exist. You’re just a pathetic excuse for a human being, and at this school, you’re a real tragedy. You see, while one of the Elect is out running for president and basically ruling the free world, you’ll be lucky to be working for one of our companies. You follow the rules, and maybe we’ll throw you a bone.”
Furious, I glared at him, ignoring their second rule. “Is that all?”
“No,” Nixon answered for Chase. This time his touch was smooth as he caressed my arm. I tried to jerk away. His face lit up with a smile, and honestly, it was like staring at a fallen angel. Nixon was gorgeous. He was an ass, but he was a gorgeous ass. “You feel this?” His hand continued moving up my arm until he reached my shoulder, and then his hand moved to my neck and his thumb grazed my trembling lips. “Memorize it now, because as of this moment, you can’t touch us. We are untouchable. If you as much as sneeze in our direction, if you as much as breathe the same air in my atmosphere, I will make your life hell. This touch, what you feel against your skin, will be the only time you feel another human being as powerful as me near you. So like I said, feel it, remember it, and maybe one day, your brain will do you the supreme favor of forgetting what it felt like to have someone like me touching you. Then, and only then, will you be able to be happy with some mediocre boyfriend and pathetic life.”
A few tears slipped down my cheek before I could stop them. I knew I needed to appear strong in front of Nixon and Chase. I just . . . I didn’t have it in me, not when he would say such cruel things. I choked back a sob and stared them down, willing the rest of the tears to stay in. I didn’t care who these guys were. They had no right to treat me like this, though it still stung. I so desperately wanted to fit in.
He jerked his hand away from my face. “Pathetic. Are you going to cry? Really?” Nixon scowled and held out his hand to Chase. Chase handed him some Purell.
“Don’t want to get farm on my hands, you understand.” Nixon smiled such a mean smile that I literally had to clench my hands at my sides to keep from punching him in the face and getting expelled.
“Don’t even think about it, New Girl. You touch me, I tell the dean, who just so happens to be Phoenix’s dad. We control the teachers because, guess what? My dad pays for everything. Now, if you have any questions about what we talked about here, please direct them to Tex and Phoenix, ’kay?”
The two guys who had been standing back from us waved and then flipped me off.
“That’s how they say hello,” Nixon explained. “All right, Chase, it seems our job here is done. Oh, and Farm Girl, don’t forget. Classes start tomorrow. Welcome to Hell.”

Chapter One
Nixon
I watched as the parade of cars made their way through the black iron gates, as if somehow those gates would protect them if the country went to war. Funny, they had no clue that the war—Lucifer himself, was already parading around inside, safe from the police- the feds- anyone who would be a threat.
            Safe from everyone but me.
My eyes flickered to Phoenix on my right, he grinned as a new girl walked up to him and gave him a flirty wave.
I elbowed him hard in the ribs.
His grin turned sour as he glared at the girl and flipped her off.
            Remember your place.
I’d said it once, twice, a million times to the guys, and they were still struggling with the idea that they weren’t here to go to school, they weren’t here to make friends. We weren’t at peace. We were in a freaking war zone.
And Phoenix’s family was our only key to redemption.
“That seems to be the last of them.” Chase’s cool gaze surveyed the main road that led into campus. It was easier on security to have one road in and one road out. Too bad life wasn’t that convenient.
If someone didn’t belong—it would take us minutes, scratch that, seconds to eliminate them, their family, all while making it look like a very unfortunate accident.
“Wait,” Tex squinted towards the iron gates, “I think there’s one more car.”
“The hell there is.” I muttered, “I counted the cars, I’ve looked at the lists, we aren’t missing anyone.”
Chase yanked the list out of my hand and started reading through the names of all the freshman enrollees. His grin made me about lose my shit as he lifted his head and handed back the paper.
“I hear Wyoming’s beautiful this time of year.”
“What?” I jerked the list away and started greedily reading through the names.
            One stood out.
Trace Rooks, Female, 18, Casper, Wyoming.
“Great.” I dropped the list onto the ground and smirked, “A girl who probably smells like cow shit. What’s her background?”
            Nobody answered.
I said it louder, this time grinding my teeth together.
Tex was the first to answer, “We couldn’t really find any.”
“Couldn’t. Really. Find. Any.” I repeated. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Look,” Tex shook his head, “We have Sergio on it, but the girl doesn’t really have a lot of information about her. Parents dead, Grandma dead, Grandpa her only living relative and somehow her social as well as her birth certificate were both lost.”
“Lost.” I licked my lips. I told my head not to go there, told my heart to stay in my damn chest and stop hoping as images flooded my mind. Dark hair, dark eyes, “Nixon, I’ll save you.”
“Dude, you okay?” Chase elbowed me.
“Let’s go welcome her to Eagle Elite.”
            Nobody moved.
“I said,” I started marching towards the girls’ dorms, “Let’s go welcome her.”
“Why do I have a feeling this is a really bad idea?” Tex said under his breath.
“For once, Tex, keep your mouth shut and stay in the background, paste a shit eating grin on your face and let me and Chase deal with this. Do you think you can do that? Hmm?”
            “Take a Xanax.” Phoenix grumbled.
I sent a seething glare in his direction.
He mumbled a curse and walked off with Tex to wait by the tree while we continued the next few feet to the girls’ dorms.
            The car was a rental.
            The grandpa was ancient.
            The girl was…young.
And she had shit as belongings. Her suitcase was covered with stickers, her grandpa handed her a small box, and I could have sworn I saw a tear escape her eye and roll down her smooth cheek.
“Hell no.” I grumbled, “She’ll be destroyed here.”
“Won’t last five minutes.” Chase agreed.
“Tears.” I wiped my face with my hands, “Tell me I’m not seeing tears.”
            “Girls don’t cry here.”
            “They don’t.” I agreed.
            “She isn’t like them.”
            “No.”
            “We need Mo.”
I laughed at that, “We need a miracle.” With a curse, I quickly dialed the number for orientation and made arrangements for the New Girl to be moved to the United States room. Mo was supposed to be on that same floor. I figured she needed all the help she could get. No way would little Wyoming survive the year with anyone else, not that I was happy about it. I mean in hindsight that was probably my first mistake.
I’d officially invited her into my life—by way of my sister.
“New girl’s here.” I said loud enough for Tracey to turn around and gape. “So squeaky clean and innocent. Like a little lamb, right, Chase?” I tilted my head and offered her a smirk.
The old man reached in his jacket. It was a move I knew well. Another clue. He wasn’t what he said he was. He wasn’t who he said he was. As if noticing my calculating glare, he removed his hand and offered a forced smile, “A welcoming committee? This place sure is nice.”
I had to respect his control. The way he protectively stood in front of Tracey as if he was the only thing standing in the way of my devouring her.
“Is there a problem?” He scratched his head, causing his shirt sleeve to fall, revealing a small tattoo. One I’d seen as a child but couldn’t place.
“Do I know you?” I blurted.
He laughed, “Know any farmers out in Wyoming?”
It was his tone that convinced me, the way his shook his head slightly, waiting for my challenge. It was the same look my Uncle gave me when he wanted me to stop pushing.
It was the look that my dad taught me when I was ten and witnessed my first torture.
The girl was still staring at us. Easy target. I’d leave the old man alone, he reminded me too much of mine. And I didn’t need that reminder, not now.
I lifted my arms and stretched lazily.
The girls eyes went wide as she stared at my body.
Chase hit me in the stomach.
I sauntered forward and tilted her chin towards me, closing her mouth in the process. “Much better,” I licked my lips and fought the urge to kiss her. Yeah, I was losing my shit. “We’d hate for our charity case to choke on an insect on her first day.” Her lips trembled as she looked from me to her Grandpa. I released her before she could do anything, and walked past, with Chase in tow.
I needed to talk to the girl at registration anyways. We disappeared behind the building, but I’d be back. I just needed the Grandpa to leave.
Within seconds the rental car was driving away. And the girl as all mine. My heart thudded against my chest, and for a second, I regretted what I was about to do.
But every possible outcome ended with either her death, or her in danger. And for some reason, I didn’t want someone like her at Eagle Elite. She didn’t belong in my world.
            She deserved a picket fence.
             A husband.
A good college experience without classmates who’d rather see her commit suicide than survive the next four years.
            They would destroy her.
And she would make it so damn easy to do so.
The only way—was to beat them to it. To be the first, marking her as our target, our play-thing.
Nobody messed with what was mine.
And in the end, nobody would mess with her. They’d allow me to entertain them with her innocence. I’d dangle her in front of them like a carrot, and at the end of the day, she’d be untouchable.
I sighed as she looked up at the building gaping like someone who’d been homeschooled and never seen a sky scraper before.
            She was too skinny.
I made a mental note to get her one of my access cards—she didn’t need to know how much they cost—or that every single student at EE would kill to have one. Mo would take care of the rest.
            She’d eat with us.
            She’d want for nothing.
It was the least I could do after what I was about to make her endure.
Licking my lips I approached her again, this time, damning myself to hell with each step I took. “Are you lost?”
“Nope.” She grinned, damn it made her prettier. “Apparently I live in the United States.” With a shrug she tried and failed to lift her heavy suitcase and nearly toppled over onto her cute ass.
I muffled a laugh, knowing that Chase was doing the exact same thing. Being mean to her would be like kicking a puppy. But the world was ugly. I just hated that I would be her tutor in the ways of reality—her prince of darkness.
Damn, I would have done anything to be the hero.
“I’m Nixon.” I stood directly in front of her, shifting my eyes from her poorly fitting clothes to her ugly shoes.
“Tracey, but everyone calls me Trace.” She held out her hand.
            I itched to touch it.
            To touch her skin.
Instead, I scowled, shook her hand, then wiped that same hand on my jeans as if she was diseased.
            “Rules.”
“What?” She took a step back.
Chase moved past me, “He’s right. As cute as you are, Farm Girl, someone needs to tell you the rules.”
Her gaze narrowed, “Can it be fast?”
Yeah, again, I almost lost my mind. Chase was probably ready to shit his pants. The last person that talked back to him was Phoenix and that ended with a few broken bones and a trip to the dentist.
“You hear that Chase?” I said amused, “She likes it fast.”
“Pity,” Chase took a step closer, nearly touching her with his body, “I’d love to give it to her slow.” His eyes raked her in, as if she was the first girl he’d ever seen in his entire existence. Jealousy surged through me. What he hell? She wasn’t his. Not that she was mine, but still. He was standing too close, too close.
“The rules.” He stepped back. My heart beat returned to normal, “No speaking to the Elect, unless you’ve been asked to speak to them.” He circled around her, staring a little long at her ass before he continued.
            “Who are the— “
“Nope. You’ve already broken a rule. I’m speaking, New Girl.” Chase smirked. “Geez, Nixon, this one’s going to be hard to break in.”
“They always are.” I said without taking my eyes from her, “But I think I’ll enjoy this one.” The first true thing I’d said. I would enjoy it too much. I’d enjoy her too much, because she reminded me of someone I used to know. Someone who offered to save me, when I was already past saving, someone who wiped my tears, and cried as if they were her own.
Chase continued with the rules. Making me sicker as her face continued to fall.
Finally she asked, “Is that all?”

“No.” Raw desire pulsed through me as I approached her, needing to touch her, needing to make sure she was real even though I knew I was acting like a complete and utter lunatic. Chase and I would have words later. He knew me better than I knew myself sometimes. I was going too far, pushing myself, pushing him.
My hand caressed her face, then moved down her smooth neck to her shoulder. I wanted to claim her, to possess her, to make her scream—but not with fear, with utter ecstasy. I had no idea who she was, but she made me want. And that was the problem.
For the first time in years. I wanted.
            I wasn’t allowed to want.
I had to die to myself.
Because in the grand scheme of things? It wasn’t about me. It was about blood, family, protection. Blood in, blood out.
Her eyes dilated. Furious that she’d reacted so easily, upset with myself for making my own body suffer, I snapped.
“You feel this? Memorize it now, because as of this moment, you can’t touch us. We are untouchable. If you as much as sneeze in our direction, if you as much breathe the same air in my atmosphere. I will make your life hell. This touch, what you feel against your skin, will be the only time you feel another human being as powerful as me near you. So like I said, feel it, remember it, and maybe one day, your brain will do you the supreme favor of forgetting what it felt like to have someone like me touching you. Then, and only then, will you be able to be happy with some mediocre boyfriend and pathetic life.” Away from me. Away from it all. Safe.
A few more tears escaped down her cheek.
And I knew in that moment. It was the beginning of the end.
            My end.
            My downfall.
            My demise.

Review:

Elite was a book that I enjoyed very much, and I'm definitely going to add this author to my list of keep an eye out for new books by. The writing really flowed smoothly and the Traci's voice really came through. It didn't feel like it was a book, it felt like it was either a movie playing out in front of me or that I was a background character in the book watching things happen.

There were lots of different moments even moments where there was deep thought and speaking on the human condition. It added more depth to the book and I really enjoyed that.

Throughout Elite, you do find yourself thinking. Either sympathizing with different characters or trying to figure out what or who is being nice only to turn around and stab Tracey in the back. It added a little bit of intrigue into the book and I liked the fact that I was suspicious about people's motives. It made for a great read.

The Eagle Elite University is definitely not like any university I've ever heard of. I loved that. It added a bit of need to find out what was all going on. I found a lot of the book questioning what the heck kind of school this was and I swear there were points in which curiosity almost killed me.

The plot was very unique as I don't think people have really thought about taking on this age group and this topic(I'm not going to mention the combo as it would be spoilery, ;)) It was new, and shiny and I don't know but it made Elite stand out in my mind, and I definitely want to read more by Rachel Van Dyken.

You should definitely give Elite a read even if New Adult/Young Adult isn't something you typically read. It was a great book, one I will definitely be reading again.
