Black Horse by Addison Kline Blog Tour!

Title : BLACK HORSE
Author : Addison Kline
Genre : Romantic Suspense

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22064966-black-horse

"What would you do if the only man you ever loved was the son of the man that murdered your parents?"
In Addison Kline's fiery romantic suspense novel, Averi Ford's future
collides with her past with ferocious intensity. Averi Ford and Colt
McClain have loved each other since they were children. They both come
from a broken past. Colt's mother died when he was young, and Averi's
parents were taken from her at the tender age of five. The same man is
responsible for both of their broken childhoods: Tom "Black Horse"
McClain. He also happens to be Colt's father. Now twenty years after the
crimes that fractured both of their hearts, Black Horse is getting out
of jail and he's coming after the girl who testified against him: Averi,
herself. Colt wants to hide her, but Averi refuses to run.
"Our past does not own us, and we owe it to our hearts to show the world
that love can arise from the darkest of places. We just have to survive
Black Horse to tell the tale."

Addison Kline did a good a good job of conveying the difficulty and intensity of that situation. Averi's voice came through loud and clear.

It was a bit strange having the main characters already be in a relationship but since there were lots of difficulty needing to be confronted as well as the fact that Averi and Colt's relationship was secret, at least from her brothers.

There was never a dull moment but there were plenty of hard moments. Addison Kline allows you to see what Colt and his mother suffered at Colt's father's hand and why Black Horse is so determined to come after Colt and Averi both.

It was a difficult read, one with secrets being revealed but it was a great read!

Cold Heart by Chandler McGrew

(Image found on Goodreads)

Mickey moved to Alaska to find some peace. But that's all destroyed when a killer starts shooting everyone. But not everything is as it seems. Will Mickey survive and more importantly help the other inhabitants of the small town in Alaska survive? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Wow, Cold Heart starts off quickly and doesn't really slow down. There is a chapter or two where you get a chance to experience some of the peace that Mickey moved to Alaska for but afterward it really didn't stop. And it was scary, and disturbing to think about that actually happening. I had goose bumps.

Cold Heart grips you and doesn't let you go. The writing draws the reader in and you find it hard to stop. And there are at least several things that you never expected or never want to know about and wow. I seriously needed to take a break and just read some romcom to make things a bit better.

Cold Heart doesn't have any romance so if you're a romance only person then I wouldn't suggest it but if you're looking to take a break and don't have too much of an overactive imagination you'll probably really enjoy it and not need a night light to sleep.

Club Medicine by Jack Kinsley

(Image found on Goodreads)

Travis had the perfect life, a wife, a baby girl that he adores and the house as well. But that all goes downhill when he starts using again. Now all he's got left is his rehab center for the wealthy. Suddenly his thoughts turn dark. How far would he go?

Club Medicine is told from Travis' third person perspective. Which is good to read as most of the internal conflict takes place in his mind. And much of the book is that inner debate on drugs and the question of murder.

You get interested in Travis' life and how it's come down from where he used to be. But you don't necessarily understand completely why until further into the book. And you actually applaud Ana for doing that to protect her daughter.

It was very ironic that the person running the rehab was the one who really needed it.

Underground Serial by Cassandra Carr

Underground Serial
by Cassandra Carr
Genre: Black Ops/Military, Action, Suspense

Off the Grid, Underground 1- The seemingly impossible has happened. The unthinkable. Those I trusted most have betrayed me. I’m a hockey player, and gave control of my finances to my parents so I could concentrate on my game. Big mistake. They stole from me, bankrupted me, in fact. And then someone come looking for money I don’t have and I made a terrible mistake; one that will haunt me forever.
But now someone has found me and offered a new start. I would no longer be a hockey player, I wouldn’t even be an actual person, totally off the grid. I’d be a shadow, fighting crime for an organization that’s underground, literally. Do I want that life?
If I go back, what kind of life would I have? Probably one in prison orange. The choice to join Underground is painful, but necessary. As my hockey coach always said, though, pain is weakness leaving the body. I will not be powerless ever again.

Creating Slapshot:
I’ve left my old life behind and officially joined Underground. It appears no one knows where I am or even if I’m still alive. I don’t know how I feel about that. My friends thinking I’m dead leaves a hole in my heart, but I’ll drive myself crazy if I obsess about it. So rather than allowing myself to wallow in self-pity or anger about what’s happened, I’m throwing all my energy into training. You would think that whole “elite athlete” thing would make everything easier, but all these new techniques I need to master—hand-to-hand combat, weapons training, surveillance procedures—are kicking my ass.
For my whole life, I’ve only had one identity. Ethan, hockey player. Now that sense of self is gone forever, slowly being replaced by my new identity, Slapshot. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe this transformation. But the more I find out about the world around me, the problems I ignored for the most part as I played a game for an obscene amount of money, the more I want to make a difference. This is not a game. It’s real life, and I have the chance to be a hero. It’s going to take everything I have—or have left, to do it.

Blurb for Underground Serial- Follow this 10-part serial throughout 2015 featuring Ethan, aka Slapshot, a hockey player whose life is ruined, forcing him to disappear forever. Ethan joins Underground, a black ops organization and is trained as a deadly operative. There, he meets Ciana, a woman with a dark past of her own. As Ethan and his Underground colleagues embark on dangerous missions worldwide, he finds a new purpose in life. But will his former problems come back to haunt him?

Review:

So I'm going to talk about these serials as if they were released in one book, otherwise there would probably be a lot of repetition or extremely short reviews. So I was actually shocked to find I enjoyed the serials part of it. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if it was one book but the serials give the author a unique chance. And they can use it or not. And so I was actually pleasantly surprised to discover that serials weren't all that bad.

Now that I've got that out of the way, I have to say that Ethan and the rest of the Underground group were very likable. Each has their history, and their strengths just as they have weaknesses. While you don't get a whole lot on the Underground group, you do learn a lot about Ethan and he's really down on his luck. Which just makes me cheer for him that much harder.

The plot itself was an interesting concept, and one that kept my attention as Ethan gets more and more involved.

Overall the Underground serials by Cassandra Carr are really good and something that would be good to read if you enjoy serials.

Workman's Complication by Rich Leder

(Image found via Goodreads)

Off-off-off-off Broadway actress Kate McCall inherits her father's PI business after he's murdered, presumably due to a case he was working on. She doesn't exactly want his business but when a job is brought to her she can't help but try her hand at the PI business. Trying to discover if a construction worker is suing the contractor for a lot of money by lying and also attempting to discover who murdered her father and why, she calls on the tenants of her brownstone and actors from the company she is working with in order to solve both cases. Find the official description on Goodreads.

The writing style of Rich Leder was informative and amusing. Workman's Complication was an amusing, light read that made for a nice break from all of the heavy books. It's a nice change and will have you laughing on the ground with the numerous characters and their interactions. Kate certainly knows some odd people and it shows in those one-liners that you read and then do a double take because you just realized how odd the sentence was. It happens a couple times as you read the book.

While I was curious as to the identity of the murderer it wasn't a driving need to be honest. I was more interested in the funny moments then the identity of the killer. Although when I found out who was involved it was a bit disconcerting and sad. I also didn't feel a driving need to finish Workman's Complication but I still would find myself picking it up if only to see what the characters were going to do next.

If you're looking for something light, and full of comedy, then Workman`s Complication is definitely a good place to start!

Bare Chested Muscle Man

EXCERPT:

I’m staring at Rafe’s hand. Big, strong, callused. A scar runs from his thumb to the index finger.

He’s looking at me, waiting. What does he want?

I lift my hand, place it in his. It fits on his palm, smaller, darker, thinner. He seems as entranced by the contrast as I am. His fingers slowly curl, closing around mine. His lips part, but no sound comes from his mouth, and his gaze remains fixed on our entwined hands, pale lashes hiding the gold of his eyes.

Now I’m the one caught, transfixed. His mouth looks soft, vulnerable, at odds with his strong, angular features and the broad set of his shoulders. The need to touch his face is overwhelming, and I step closer, so close I can sense his scent. Not a cologne, but the deep scent of his skin, like musk and warm metal. I can see the rise and fall of his chest underneath the black Deathmoth T-shirt he’s wearing under his open jacket, see the outline of his strong pecs.

We’re standing so close our breaths mingle, and our bodies touch in places as we shift, feathery brushes that send fire across my skin, into my belly, making me ache. He places his hands on my waist and I grip his thick, sinewy forearms. My stomach drops as if I’m standing at the edge of a precipice, on the edge of a moment that can change everything.

What’s happening? It’s as if in the hollow darkness, the barrier between us is crumbling, the wall he’s set between himself and the world is falling.

His hands tighten on my hipbones and his lashes lift, his gaze moving to my mouth. His breathing is ragged. He tugs me against him, his fingertips digging painfully into my flesh, his arms flexing with barely controlled strength.

His arousal presses into my stomach, hot and thick, caught sideways in his jeans.

My mind fills up with static. Rafe wants me. There’s the solid proof of his desire. The heated gaze I’ve felt so often on me is translated into a physical reaction, and it makes me feel so hot I might burst into flames. He’s so handsome, I can’t help myself. I want to stroke his square jaw, drag my fingertips over the golden stubble on his cheeks, kiss those damnable dimples.

I whimper, the sound coming from deep inside me, and he freezes, goes so still I’m not even sure he’s breathing.

Then he jerks back, releases me so fast I’m left reeling.

“Fuck,” he hisses. He buries his fingers in his short blond hair, pulls, his mouth now hard like the rest of him, pressed into a flat line. “This is a mistake.”

A knot is gathering in my throat, in my chest, cutting off air.

I want to be mad at him, but his hands are trembling, and his amber eyes so full of pain I forget my anger before it even forms. He’s like mist, here and suddenly gone, lost into thin air. I have to touch him, touch his bare skin, prove he’s real.

“Wait.” I lift my hand to his face, fingertips skimming over the smooth skin of his cheekbone. Warm. Satin soft.

A pang goes through my chest, an ache that feels too much like sorrow, and I’m not sure if it’s mine or his.

He jerks away, his eyes wide on his pale face. He reaches up, his hand hovering over the spot I touched. Then he turns and rushes off into the crowd.

My hand is still hovering in midair. I don’t know for how long I stand there, staring at my splayed fingers, trying to figure out what happened. Or maybe trying to find another explanation for his reaction, desperate for him to be different to any other handsome, arrogant guy. Maybe I imagined the pain in his gaze – or maybe that pain is real but doesn’t make a difference. Traumatic past or not, he’s sorry he touched me, sorry he desired me. Big surprise. Why would he desire me, of all girls? There are so many vying for his attention. Girls who have witty, sexy things to say, and who don’t go stiff like cardboard when he touches them.

The thought of him touching other girls shouldn’t hurt quite as much as it does. And this is a bad sign. Very bad sign, Megan, I tell myself and lower my hand that touched him. I feel as if my fingertips are numb, burnt by the feel of his skin.

Unrelenting Nightmare by Stan Yocum

(Image found on Goodreads)

Stuart Garrison is in the cross hairs of a famous assassin, who was hired by his rival. The FBI has been trying to track Nomed down for years and when they finally catch a break, they jump on the opportunity. But certain things beyond their control keep bringing Nomed too close for comfort. Will they be able to save Stuart Garrison or will Nomed strike again? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Overall, Unrelenting Nightmare  was an easy read, with lots of action to keep your attention. Stan Yocum has created characters that you're either in love with and cheering for or hate and wish they were dead. And the writing had few if any errors in it. It seemed to almost flawlessly go across the page.

There are certain scenes that honestly will make no sense until you get farther into the book. They serve as background information and it definitely makes the characters come to life, even if you think they're a bit disturbed or arrogant.

The virtual reality concepts that were throughout the book actually sounded really interesting and like something that I would certainly love to see in the future!

Overall, Unrelenting Nightmare was a good, strong read.

Captured Lies by Maggie Thom Blog Tour!

Book #1 The Caspian Wine Series

Suspense/Thriller

Date Published: October 2012

She was kidnapped not once but twice and now someone wants her dead because of it...

Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story... but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

But can she do it in time...

Captured Lies won Book of the Month LAS Reviews (March 2014)

"This is a story that when you start to read it you don’t want to put it down until you finish it." Cindy's Reviews

"Captured Lies is a very edge of your seat sort of book... I was totally enthralled with this book..." Tammy's Tea Time

"Maggie Thom has a hidden gem with Captured Lies!... Like an onion, each layer of this action-packed tale becomes more involved, more wickedly deceitful and more dangerous..." Tome Tender

"Captured Lies is an outstanding book and it was a book I couldn't put down..." Dee Sauter (Moderator Linda Howard Book Junkies)

Excerpt:

Bailey wasn’t sure what had hit her harder—her mom being dead, or her mom having health problems and not sharing that with her.

Straightening, she squared her shoulders. “Just tell me who put out the money to pay for my mom’s funeral. Who organized it? It doesn’t make any sense.” The problem was that her mom had no friends, just Bailey.

Mr. Sommervold pushed up his round wire-rimmed glasses. She’d already noticed that they had a tendency to slide down his nose.

“I’m not leaving without answers.”

The door opened, his assistant, a stunning auburn-haired woman, poked her head in. “Mr. Sommervold, the Greenings are here. They have a few things they’d like to discuss with you before the funeral this afternoon.”

Solemn-faced, he nodded then turned to face Bailey. “I don’t know who paid for it. Mr. Lund sent me a letter requesting all that she wanted for a funeral. He also provided a second letter.” He opened the folder in front of him, pulled out an envelope, closed the file and dropped it into the bottom drawer of his desk. After a short hesitation, he slid the envelope across to Bailey.

She stared at him for a full minute before reaching out and picking it up. Her name was scrawled across it in her mother’s handwriting. She pressed it between her palms.

“I’m sure this will answer some of your questions. For any others you have, you’ll need to talk to Mr. Lund. Here’s his business card.”

Bailey stared at the envelope. Would it give her the answers she needed?

“Now if you’ll excuse me. I have other clients I need to see.”

She jerked up her head. Mr. Sommervold was standing in the open doorway, obviously waiting for her to leave. A bit dazed, she stood and walked past him to the main foyer, where she stopped.

Everything seemed surreal. Even the rich, immaculate oak entranceway was too perfect, too daunting. Soft hymn music drifted through the building. Quiet voices, whispered, reverent tones heard only at solemn times, drifted to her. They made everything more unreal.

She felt like a character in dream. A bad one. An unexpected shiver shook her out of her reverie.

Review:

The first scene in Captured Lies is attention grabbing. It is obvious later on in the book that the main character was involved in the first scene. Although we're not sure why or what happened to lead to that scene so there's still plenty of mystery left. Then there was also the fact that a lot of people seemed to be after Bailey and discovering their motives becomes the main motive of the reader(or at least it was mine).

Much of Captured Lies had a lot of attention to detail. The author was through and made sure that the reader could easily picture everyone and everything. It wasn't hard to see the book as a movie going through my head. I enjoyed the descriptions and the ease that the author had when describing things.

It was clear that everyone was connected somehow and sometimes we'd be given little glimpses of the connections but it took a while to put together how people were connected, especially to Bailey and why they all wanted to find her and/or hurt her. It was interesting to see all of these connections come to light. I enjoyed it and the difficultly of trying to figure out who was connected with whom and why.

Then there were the characters. Bailey was an interesting character. She had absolutely no idea who she really was and when it came to light she didn't go looking for a payout or anything. She just wanted to get to know the family she never had. It was refreshing in a book full of characters that were greedy. And Guy. Guy was great! He was amusing, refreshing, and appreciated everything he was given. I have to admit that he was my favorite character in Captured Lies.

Captured Lies is a good read for people who enjoy suspense and mysteries. It was an interesting book, with lots of connections to figure out.

Rules of Survival by Jus Accardo

(Image found on Goodreads.)
"I was losing my touch." -Jus Accardo, Rules of Survival

Mikayla has been following her mother's rules all of her life as they lived on the run. But a year after her mother's murder she breaks one...and finds trouble. Bounty hunters have finally caught up to her and she is a suspect in her mother's murder. But Mikayla knows that her mother left a clue to lead her to the real murderer. However she ends up handcuffed to a rather handsome and dangerous bounty hunter. Will they kill each other before finding out the truth or will the truth really set Mikayla free? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Rules of Survival is told from the prospective of Mikayla. Which is great because we get to see everything that's going on from her point of view. But what's even better is the fact that the narration is told in Mikayla's voice. Yes, that sentence may not make a lot of sense but she's got a good sense of humour, and an easy way of telling the story. It keeps the reader engaged and the plot line keeps the reader interested. Not to mention that Mikayla is witty and her banter with Shaun is very entertaining.

We know little about either character's past and it becomes an addiction to find out everything you can about what has happened to make Mikayla and her mother run from the law. Not to mention have a bounty hunter come after them so much and so hard. Because it can't be solely from the money that he has that almost hatred for Mikayla's mom.

Jus Accardo has created characters that readers can empathize with and who draw the readers in. Rules of Survival is quite enjoyable and I suggest you give it a read.

"These things didn't happen to people she knew." -Liz Long, Witch Hearts

Ruby is a witch, as is her best friend Courtney so you would think they'd be safe from murderers. But what if one was able to get through their protection spells? The very first chapter sounds like it's describing the beginning of an episode of Criminal Minds. I've always loved that show, even though I can't watch it after dark in a house by myself(I'm not a fan of scary, if you couldn't tell, haha).

"I think sometimes you just see a girl and something about her captures you." -Melissa Pearl, I Know Lucy

Lucy has been on the run for five years now, constantly hiding from a corrupt official who killed both her parents in front of her own eyes. But when he starts digging into her past with the help of his reporter uncle, will she be able to fight her way away from Zach? Or will he be the one thing she can't leave behind no matter what happens to her? Find the official description on Goodreads.

The first thing I'm going to point out is that the author did something different with her writing. Many of the chapters are from first person perspective.

Deadly Fantasies By Kelly Miller

(Image found on Goodreads)
"Now it was time to repay the favor." -Kelly Miller, Deadly Fantasies

Detective Kate Springer knows that the early morning call can mean only one thing - a murder has taken place. But what she doesn't expect to hear is the voice of her psychologist confessing to her husband's murder. Loyal to a fault, Kate runs to the aid of Dr. Nina Grace. But is she truly just a victim in all of this? Or is she the murderer? Find the official description on Goodreads.

When I first got this book, I was a little nervous, but I was assured that it was meant to be a standalone as well as part of the series so it would not be difficult to read this book. It's the second in the Detective Kate Springer series. And I wasn't missing anything at all. If anything was mentioned about Kate's past, there was some kind of explanation. I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not having read the first book in the series before reading Deadly Fantasies. It was easy to slip into the book even without having read the first book.
