Victoria doesn't have time for love after a bitter divorce. She's too busy. Her twin daughters are approaching puberty and her interior design business is expanding. So when Nick enters her life, she has to remember why she's too busy for a little lust. Which is difficult considering he's the contractor hired to redo her office. Besides, his tattoos and MMA past make him a poor candidate for a woman who's trying to level out her life. Nick thinks Victoria's hot but doesn't want to get involved with a woman who has kids, much less one that's been hurt by a man. Too much baggage. He's sworn off relationships, tending to stick with one-night stands. Victoria is a client, one he doesn't want to cross the line with, but the more he's near her, the quicker his resolve weakens.

REVIEW:

Samantha Long has created a good romance. The writing was well done and the style kept the reader engaged. Not to mention the plot was a great read. The characters were well created and the secondary characters were just as fierce and have as much personality as the main characters, and this was shown.

Crossing the Line follows the up and downs of real life, from the perspective of a divorcee with twin daughters and a bachelor who didn't think he'd want a ready made family. It was intriguing to see this different perspective on life from the one I have.

But it was also hard at times. You got so much into the head of Victoria and Nick that their difficulties are also yours.

Crossing the Line was a great read!

The Echoes of Love by Hannah Fielding

(Image found on Goodreads)
"Ever since she could remember, Venice in moonlight had held a strange magical power over her." -Hannah Fielding, The Echoes of Love

I don't think I could do justice to this book so I'm just going to copy the synopsis from Goodreads.

Set against the breathtaking beauty of Italy, The Echoes of Love is a passionate, heart-breaking romance to ignite the senses and rekindle your belief in the power of love. Seduction, passion and secrets... Venetia Aston-Montagu has escaped to Venice to work in her godmother's architectural practice, putting a lost love behind her. For the past ten years she has built a fortress around her heart, only to find the walls tumbling down one night of the carnival when she is rescued from masked assailants by an enigmatic stranger, Paolo Barone. Drawn to the powerfully seductive Paolo, despite warnings of his Don Juan reputation and rumours that he keeps a mistress, Venetia can't help being caught up in the smouldering passion that ignites between them. When she finds herself assigned to a project at his magnificent home deep in the Tuscan countryside, Venetia not only faces a beautiful young rival but also a sinister count and dark forces in the shadows, determined to come between them. Can Venetia trust that love will triumph, even over her own demons? Or will Paolo's carefully guarded, devastating secret tear them apart forever?

The writing in this book was fabulous! It really drew the reader in, capturing their attention. It was just really good, and I couldn't stop reading. Hannah Fielding was descriptive without it being all about the looks of people. She also described personalities in a truly unique fashion.

The plot was interesting, kept things going. Although I occasionally saw things coming but not how they came about. So while the end point was at least somewhat visible(or hoped for) the path was hidden and fun to walk.

For the most part, we are only given Venetia's thoughts. This adds lots of mystery and intrigue to Paolo. Because even though we do get several short periods with Paolo and his thoughts, it doesn't clear things up as much as adds to his mystery a bit.

The Echoes of Love takes it's time establishing characters and working on the plot. The interactions between characters were amusing and fun for the most part while still having occasional depth and darkness to them.

All my questions were eventually answered and the ending was beautiful. It brought the book to a nice, final conclusion.

I enjoyed reading The Echoes of Love and if you enjoy romance than it would certainly be a book for you.

Portland Storm Series Blog Tour Stop!

So I was introduced to Catherine Gayle through the Seduced by the Game Anthology and I was really excited to find that there was a tour which gave me the oppurtunity to review all three of the Portland Storm Series! So here we go! Oh but first!

WARNING: These books contain sexual content and are not appropriate for younger readers

New Adult/Adult Contemporary Romance/Sports Romance
Life’s been rough lately for Noelle Payne, but she’s not one to let negativity rule. So, she lost her job? She’ll find another one. The bank foreclosed on the house? Well, she can live out of her car for a while. There’s always an upside to be found…but now Noelle needs to find something to give her life meaning. She owes it to the universe to figure it out, too, because a stranger just saved her life.
When Liam Kallen’s wife died, his goal-scoring ability died with her. After a trade from the only pro hockey team he’s ever played for, he’s now playing for the NHL’s Portland Storm. Everyone said he needed a change of scenery, but nothing changes until he rescues Noelle. All of a sudden, the world once again looks bright and he’s lighting the lamp like he used to.
Noelle’s cheerful disposition is just the bit of sunlight Liam needs in his life. He wants to give her everything she needs because she’s everything he wants. The problem? She doesn’t believe she needs anything…at least nothing material. The one thing they both know she truly needs—a real purpose—also happens to be the one thing he doesn’t know how to give her. If he can’t help her find that, she might walk away and take all her sunshine with her.

Review:
"I smiled, determined to look for the positive, and I gave him a confident nod."-Catherine Gayle, Light the Lamp

The third book in the Portland Storm series continues dealing with emotional issues. But this time the emotional issues are far different. Both characters have baggage from their past and must learn to move on as anyone does. But Liam is definitely drowning in his baggage.
When we find out Liam's background(which happens fairly quickly) we also get to see the deep grief that he still feels. Catherine Gayle portrays these emotions without going overboard. There are a lot of What If's tormenting Liam and it's obvious to see this without going over each and every one. I empathized him but didn't have as deep a connection with Liam as I had with previous characters. Maybe because he's new to the series, or I just couldn't find something in him that I felt made a connection.
The descriptions that Catherine Gayle has used throughout her series is amazing and it's no exception when she describes Noelle. I definitely wish that I could be more like Noelle and found myself having this instant connection with her. I felt really close almost like a best friend throughout the entire book. Noelle constantly has this positive outlook on life and after knowing what she went through and is still going through, you fell really close to her.
The readers are also given glimpses of previous characters lives and it's amazing to see these glimpses. It made me feel as if their story was still continuing and I loved that feeling.
Light the Lamp is an amazing addition to the Portland Storm series, and I'm really excited to see more of this series from Catherine Gayle! Especially Babs story whenever that may be!

She’s reaching for a breakaway pass.
Dana Campbell has spent the past seven years in self-imposed isolation for a crime she didn’t commit. The danger is well in the past, but her panic attacks make it impossible to have a normal, healthy relationship with a man. Even her counselor has given up on her. She has to find someone she trusts to help her fight through the panic, or her seven-year ordeal will become a lifetime sentence. There’s only one man she feels safe enough to ask.
He got caught with his head down.
As the captain of the NHL’s once elite but now fading Portland Storm, Eric Zellinger knows a thing or two about keeping his focus on the job. Questions are flying about his ability to lead the team back to the playoffs. If they don’t make it, he might be shipped out of town. It’s the worst time possible for his best friend’s kid sister to divide his focus. How can he give her what she needs without jeopardizing both the Storm’s playoff hopes and his future with the team?
It’s her only chance, but it’s his last shot.

Review:
“Panic attacks are crazy beasts. They don’t care what you think you’re ready for. They don’t care what you want. They just take control, and then you suffer.” -Catherine Gayle, Breakaway

Okay, so first of all, my introduction to this series came through the Seduced by the Game anthology so I apologize if I mention Babs and Katie more than I probably should. They were the first characters I was introduced to in this world and so I hold them in a special place. Plus.....Babs......if you've read any of the Portland Storm books than you'll know what I'm talking about. Now, on to the actual review!

Catherine Gayle easily introduces her characters and some of their pasts while keeping other things for later. The past and present are easily distinguishable but not in a jarring way. It almost seems as if a friend of a friend is explaining something to you so that you'll understand what is going on. Or at least some of what is going on.

Throughout the book I felt the emotions of the characters and I especially felt myself reacting with Dana many times. If she blushed I would blush just because it sounds like an embarrassing incident or something like that. Catherine Gayle has created characters that readers can easily connect with and even in some parts of these books, take their places. At least in the reader's mind.

Then there's also the fact that Catherine Gayle isn't afraid of the more sensitive topics. She doesn't hide from them and yet she's not making the topic too uncomfortable for her readers or treating it in such a way as to be disrespectful.

It's also the way that you get involved in the lives of the characters. I sometimes felt myself wishing that I could slap the two at points in the book because of some idiotic decisions they made. We also had humorous situations that made you laugh.

I also enjoyed the fact that Eric is the first to admit his feelings, at least to himself. It's different to have a guy in a novel admit right out that he's in love with a girl mentally than fight the connection until it finally clicks. It made Breakaway stand out in my mind and I enjoyed it immensely.

Then there's the fact that it includes hockey, and not just a scene or two at the rink but several, most that take place during an actual game. I enjoyed the hockey(especially because the Canadiens were out of the playoffs by the time I started reading these books.)

Breakaway is a great book, and Catherine Gayle has created marvelous characters that help to draw the reader in. If you haven't already, and you love hockey and romance than you should definitely give her books a chance!

 Released February 2104
Injury after injury has put Brenden Campbell’s NHL career on hold for years. Now he’s playing for the Portland Storm and determined to make it stick. Few things in life drive him more than being told he can’t have something he wants, and what he wants most is to prove he belongs. Brenden also wants Rachel Shaw, the cute, little redhead who just got hired as the general manager’s new assistant. But then she went and made herself off-limits, telling him: “I don’t date.” Those three words pretty much guarantee that he’ll do everything he can to change her mind.
Rachel is changing things up on the fly for her family, moving them somewhere she can be the kind of mom her kids deserve. Allowing anyone else to be in their lives is out of the question, at least until her instincts get back on track. How else can she be sure who to steer the kids clear of? Right now she trusts no one, including herself, and especially not a man like Brenden Campbell. He’s way too handsome and a little bit cocky. Falling for a guy like him is a mistake she can’t afford to make twice.

Review:
"I just needed someone—anyone—to look past my lack of experience and education, to give me a chance."- Catherine Gayle, On the Fly
Breakaway introduced us to the world of the Portland Storm hockey team but it also introduced us to several characters that also play a part in On the Fly, most importantly Brenden 'Soupy' Campbell(because apparently that's just going to happen if someone has the last name Campbell). It was a new story but at the same time familiar because we were able to view characters from the previous book(Dana, and Babs, for example.) While Brenden and Rachel are the main characters this does not mean that we don't get some information on other characters. I enjoyed this method. It allows readers to see periphery characters as actual people and just not characters that are there for some reason.

On the Fly is a completely different situation from the previous book. While not completely but pretty much different. Catherine Gayle is still dealing with sensitive issues with care but not avoiding them. But this time it isn't the main character that is the one dealing with this issue, or at least not the one that was the victim of this issue. Instead she is the mother. And On the Fly gives us a whole new perspective on the difficult issue of rape.

We also feel for both Brenden and Rachel. With each chapter that the readers read from their perspectives, we gain valuable insight into why Brenden is so frustrated and desperate. We also see why Rachel is so cynical and mistrustful. This first person perspective allows readers to get into their heads and understand where they are coming from. It really helps to form a connection with both Rachel and Brenden.

Not to mention the rest of the characters. We get more of Babs, and I found myself looking forward to seeing Rachel's children, Tuck and Maddie grow more comfortable, happy and hilarious throughout the book. They seemed to add comic relief to On the Fly, relieving the tension that can come from dealing with difficult issues.

You won't be disappointed if you pick up On the Fly as well as read the rest of the Portland Storm Series.

Fractured by Leanne Pearson Blog Tour Stop!

TOUR

Fractured
by Leanne Pearson
Publication Date: June 1, 2014
Genres: Contemporary, Romance
Blog Tour, Blitz, Release Day: Fractured by Leanne Pearson
Synopsis: For twenty three year old Katrina Smith, the events of one day irrevocably changed her life.

Life in Christchurch, New Zealand, couldn't have been better. She was in love with a wonderful man, had a job she enjoyed, and had her life mapped out before her...

What dawned as a typical summer’s day, changed into a day of devastation and overwhelming loss. An insidious danger lay beneath the benign land surface, seismic tension, like a ticking time-bomb, was counting down to a catastrophe. And Kate and her boyfriend, Daniel, were in its path. It took mere seconds for the world to be ripped out from under her. Suddenly, Kate was deluged by a vortex of Post Traumatic Stress, guilt and crippling anguish.

Dominic Dell’Antonio, an American marine working in New Zealand, was a man hiding from his own demons which lurked behind depth-less blue eyes that read so much, yet yielded so little. He kept himself aloof and isolated. Nightmares regularly plagued him.

As Kate slipped under a suffocating wave of heartache, she blocks out the world behind self imposed walls, drowning in the torrents of grief. Quiet, yet commanding, Dominic connects with Kate on some inexplicably deeper level. He wants to protect her. He wants to make her his.

Two damaged and guarded souls drawn together through tragic circumstances. Two lonely hearts drawn to one another to find comfort.
About the Author: Leanne Pearson grew up in Durban, South Africa. She later immigrated to New Zealand, where she now lives with her husband, and two children. During her down time, if she's not reading, she can be found relaxing outside, sipping on an apple cider, soaking up the sights and sounds of rural New Zealand. Leanne has had a few feature articles published in the newspaper over the years and has had a flair for creative writing from a very young age.
Review:

“I’m what so many are referring to as “lucky”, a “survivor”.” -Leanne Pearson, Fractured

Kate survives a huge earthquake while her longtime boyfriend, Daniel dies in the rubble. Kate has to deal with the pain and guilt that comes along with that and when Dominic comes along it seems to make things worse and yet better. But can Kate pull herself out of the destructive behaviour she’s demonstrating or will it drag her down to the bottom? Find the official description on Goodreads.

The story is told from mostly Kate’s perspective. We get to see intimately the grief and guilt she is dealing with after Daniel’s death and the ways she turns to handle them as well as why she turns to those specific things. It’s painful to read and yet because most of us have lost someone we can at least empathize with her if not sympathize. We also get to see some of Dominic’s perspective which gives us a look into his past something that is necessary in order to understand why he is the way he is. Both are affected by their pasts and it’s easy to see when you actually understand what is in their pasts, especially the tragedies.

Leanne Pearson realistically portrays the pain and grief that both Dom and Kate experience. Not only that but Kate experiences survivors guilt and it seems very realistic. It’s easy to get lost in their pain and Kate’s guilt, feeling their pain as well as sadness for their tragic pasts.

However this means that it is a very emotionally painful book. It seemed that I had many more downs than ups while reading this book and yet sometimes that’s refreshing to read. In the case of Fractured this was true. It was marvellous to feel the pain and guilt and grief over their losses throughout the book while still experiencing those few moments of happiness. I enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster and it kept me reading.

If you’re interested in dealing with a lots of emotion as well as romance than this is the book that I would strongly suggest for you. It’s interesting, emotionally charged and just a marvellous read. Do you prefer books that have lots of ups and downs? Or do you prefer something a little more stable?

Touched to the Heart by Elsa Winckler

(Image found on Goodreads)
"The Cavallo brothers packed a hell of a punch."-Elsa Winckler, Touched to the Heart
WARNING: This book contains sexual content and is not meant for younger readers.

Physiotherapist Caitlin Sutherland has what seems every type of bad date possible. But when Don Cavallo takes part in a race and needs the help of a physiotherapist, will he be the next subject for Caitlin's blog? Especially because he's known for dating a certain type of woman. Not only that but Don has had issues with females in the past as they've only gone for his fame and fortune. Can both move past their issues or will they be too much? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Elsa Winckler has created two characters that shouldn't fall in love and make it work and yet they do. It was interesting to see how the past affected the future for Caitlin and Don especially because both weren't looking for lasting relationships. Instead they seemed to be trying to find everything they possibly could to stay apart. It was amusing to see their thought processes as they did so.

Not to mention the funny moment that the two meet. It was amusing to see the sparks from the very beginning even though both get off on the wrong foot.

The writing was smooth, and it flowed well. It was a perfect mixture of funny and serious. Touched to the Heart is a great romance read, and I suggest you give it a chance! It comes out July 1st, 2014.
