On Thin Ice by Aven Ellis!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

On Thin Ice follows Matt Rhinelander and Holly Johansson through their romance. It was a great, sweet read! The two made a cute couple and helped each other to be better than they had been previously. Honestly I want my own Aven Ellis hero!

Both Matt and Holly are great characters, flawed as we all are. However they also work together to help the other and make the other a better person than they are alone. I loved watching them figure each other out and work towards the relationship they wanted to have.

Plus we got to see some familiar characters, which I must admit there were times I just wanted to smack Nate because the man seems to be pretty persistent and clueless when it comes to his sister's love life. It just made me want to yell at him to get a clue....but you know I didn't, I was on the bus and thought that might be taken a bit negatively by the people around me.

Dreaming Up A Dare by Catherine Gayle(Kindle Worlds)

Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Dare-Love-Dreaming-Kindle-Novella-ebook/dp/B01I0KL08W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468010661&sr=8-1&keywords=dreaming+up+a+dare

Alright! So Catherine Gayle wrote Dreaming up a Dare for the Dare to Love Kindle Worlds. It released yesterday but considering I was on vacation and our flight got delayed I was unable to post about it or my review, which really saddened me as I really enjoyed this story and I wanted to share on release day!

I'm really not certain how to explain why I enjoyed this book so much. But I'll try to break it down. First off, I've read almost all the hockey romances that Catherine Gayle has written and each one has been touching and both characters are so strong and deal with difficult situations throughout the books. This is just one reason that I love the books she writes. I found that Dreaming Up A Dare was much too short...because I really wanted more of Jackson and Pepper! While hockey didn't play as big a role in the novella as usually would be but that was fine as we watched Jackson and Pepper dance around their attraction and the relationship they wished to pursue.

It was great to get both perspectives so that we could understand how both felt and see that they had similar fears about changing their relationship.

I have yet to read any of the Dare to Love series but Catherine Gayle's inclusion of the characters from that series in this novella and their interactions with Jackson and Pepper make me eager to read them!

Rushing the Goal by Toni Aleo

INTRODUCING
RUSHING THE GOALnow-available-01Introduced in Toni Aleo’s Bellevue Bullies Series, it’s the Sinclair brothers’ big sister’s turn to find love in the next installment of the New York Times and USA Today best-selling series, the Assassins.

lucy-01
Lucy Sinclair was no stranger to pain.
She grew up with three younger brothers, met a bad boy, got pregnant by him, married him, and then suffered through a nasty divorce from him. Pain. That was pain. To top it off, she even had to go through the heartbreaking divorce of her parents. Through it all, she survived. All she cared about was making sure her daughter was happy and taken care of. Despite an ex-husband hell-bent on ruining her life, she fought to overcome. She’s gotten to the point that she’s okay with being just okay. She never cared about herself because she never had the time. It was Angie and only Angie she focused on, but that all changed when Benji Paxton offered to help her daughter on the ice.

benji-01
Benji knew the moment he saw Lucy, he’d never be the same. Especially when she came with the bundle of crazy that was her daughter. His heart wasn’t ready for them. After years spent sobering up and finding who he was without the alcohol, he never forgot he was being punished for not appreciating the love he had when he was younger. Because of his past, he had gotten used to being alone, a recluse, but even he had to admit it was getting old. He was lonely. Hockey wasn’t enough anymore. He wanted a family; he wanted his true love, and Lucy and Angie were just that.

lost souls 2-01

Benji and Lucy were just two lost souls.
Floating through life with no purpose.
But finding each other gave them direction, a chance at a future.

REVIEW:

Toni Aleo is one of my must read authors so of course I jumped on the newest addition to the Assassins' family! And woah, what a ride! There were so many scenes that just tore at your emotions, making you immensely happy or sad that you almost felt as if you were a puppet and Toni Aleo was the puppet master. It was a well written book, both characters and plot well thought out and in the case of the plot well timed, not rushed but not dragging out either. Toni has certainly made a book that will impress her readers and draw more into the world of the Assassins' family!

HOOKED BY LOVE

By Toni Aleo

COMING 12.28.2015
Things are out of control for the Sinclair boys! With two already in the NHL, Jace Sinclair is ready to follow in his brothers’ HUGE skates in the last Bellevue Bullies novel…

Jace Sinclair here, and I’m amazing. There is no other way to describe me. I am the leading scorer for the Bellevue Bullies, I’m the captain, and people love me: my family, my teammates, my coach, and the NHL. I already have one foot in the draft and I’m ready. This is my last year in college–it’s basically a conditioning year to get me ready for the NHL, to further my game, and I have to be focused. But then, it’s also my last year to have fun and not give a damn before my life really starts. Which means I’m gonna run through every girl I meet. That’s my plan. Because my one and only love is hockey. It keeps me warm even when it’s freezing. It’s always there when nothing else is. And it pushes me to be the best I can be. It’s my love.

That is, until I see her against a tree with a guitar.

Avery.

The last thing I wanted was to meet anyone. My heart is on the bench because I’ve watched my mom get broken by the person I call my father, and I don’t want that for myself. I don’t want to be hurt by anyone. I can’t give them that power.

But my heart is begging for ice time, and I can’t control it around her.

* * *

I’ve always been in the background. No one has ever had time for me and that’s fine; I’ve learned to cope. Coming from a family where hockey is life, the last thing I want is some big, burly hockey player charging at me. I don’t have time for it, but Jace Sinclair isn’t one to be deked around. The thing is, I came to the University of Bellevue for one reason and one reason only. To make my dreams of being a singer/songwriter come true. To work in the industry and pay my dues. Become who I really want to be.

I didn’t want to meet anyone. I didn’t want to end up freezing the puck with him. It’s not what I want.

I have demons.

I have issues.

Living in the shadows, no one even knew until it was too late. But Jace wants to know.

He wants me.

And that scares me the living hell out of me.

We were so worried about what would happen if we fell, but we never thought what could happen in the process of falling. We never saw it coming. But it’s here, and the repercussions are not pretty. We should have known that there is no way out of the zone when you are being Hooked by Love.

Delayed Penalty by Sophia Henry Blog Tour!

DELAYED PENALTY
Pilots Hockey #1
Sophia Henry
Releasing Sept 1st, 2015

She closed her heart long ago. He
just wants to open her mind. For fans of Toni Aleo and Sawyer Bennett, the
debut of Sophia Henry’s red-hot Detroit Pilots series introduces a hockey team
full of complicated men who fight for love.

Auden Berezin is used to losing
people: her father, her mother, her first love. Now, just
when she believes those childhood wounds are finally healing, she loses
something else: the soccer scholarship that was her ticket to college.
Scrambling to earn tuition money, she’s relieved to find a gig translating for
a Russian minor-league hockey player—until she realizes that he’s the same
dangerously sexy jerk who propositioned her at the bar the night before.

Equal parts muscle and scar tissue,
Aleksandr Varenkov knows about trauma. Maybe that’s what draws him to Auden. He
also lost his family too young, and he channeled the pain into his passions:
first hockey, then vodka and women. But all that seems to just melt away the
instant he kisses Auden and feels a jolt of desire as sudden and surprising as
a hard check on the ice.

After everything she’s been through,
Auden can’t bring herself to trust any man, let alone a hot-headed puck jockey
with a bad reputation. Aleksandr just hopes she’ll give him a chance—long
enough to prove he’s finally met the one who makes him want to change.

REVIEW:

There were some laughs in this book as well as romance, and pain. Delayed Penalty includes it all. One thing that I really enjoyed was the descriptions. They were detailed enough to give you the setting and characters but not detailed enough to become overly much or boring.

The character building and relationship building was interesting to watch. Auden never let anyone including Aleksandr walk all over her and Aleksandr had his sweet moments while also being a big pain in the butt at times.

The plot followed along at a decent pace and I enjoyed the little conversations that were slipped in as well as learning what made each character tick.

The ending was very beautiful and I really enjoyed both Sophia Henry's writing style and the plot and characters of Delayed Penalty.

Home Ice by Catherine Gayle!

(Image found on Goodreads)

Mattias Bergstrom never lets the Portland Storm players see his soft side. Only his sister who has Down Syndrome is allowed that pleasure. But when a young girl with Down Syndrome throws herself at one of his defense men, his heart melts and he finds himself falling in love with not only the little girl but her mother. Find the official description on Goodreads

Catherine Gayle always creates hockey romances that make me fall in love with each character. And this is no different. It was certainly a different experience though to get the perspective of the Coach, as that isn't frequently a thing that happens when it comes to hockey romances.

Another thing I like about Catherine Gayle's books is that each book has one thing that sets it apart as different, whether this be dealing with the aftereffects of rape or having a child with Down Syndrome. But these things that each female protagonist face set these books apart and again, Home Ice is no different in this respect.

The writing style as well as the characters are well thought out and enjoyable. I don't think there's ever been a Portland Storm character I've hated, just ones that slightly annoyed me before I was able to get to know them better.

If you're looking for something to get you through until Hockey Season comes then definitely give Catherine Gayle's Portland Storm series a look!

Overtime by Toni Aleo Teaser Tuesday!

Overtime by Toni Aleo
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Down and out with an injury keeping him away from the game, Assassins’ defenseman Jordie Thomas lives for the blades of his skates on the ice and the feeling of oblivion off it. With no choice but to heal, he’s forced away from the sport that runs through his veins. With everything at stake and darkness setting in, he quickly finds himself spiraling even further out of control. As his life begins to come crashing down around him and his contract with the Nashville Assassins on the line, he’s given an ultimatum. Ready or not, Jordie is forced to face his past, the fears that consume him, and the one woman he let walk away.

Kacey King had her professional dreams come true, yet her heart was battered and broken. With an Olympic gold medal around her neck, she’s ready to look forward to the future but without the one man she wanted in it. She’s missing the key pieces of her heart she left months ago with the only person who was capable of destroying it, causing her to falter in all her plans to move on.

In the game of life, there are winners and losers, and neither Jordie nor Kacey want to be on the losing bench. If only Jordie could convince Kacey he’s a changed man and that he wants her right by his side as his MVP for the biggest and best parts of a life they build together. With emotions running high and the game on the line, can two proud people find happiness with each other, or will their hearts and souls be left in the cold? Will they see that sometimes having someone by your side who knows the good, bad, and broken is better than going it alone and losing everything through the back of the net? They are out of time on the game clock and fighting for the win of their lives.

But overtime was made for an Assassin like Jordie.

---------- Teaser ----------

He had consistently been making bad decision after bad decision. Each one was staring back at him from behind his closed lids, and he wished he could make them all go away. But still they flashed in his face, demanding his attention.

It was time to make the right choice for once.
He had to, because he had already lost the one person who meant everything to him, and he couldn’t lose hockey too.

Game Changer by Melissa Cutler

(Image found on Goodreads)

Brandon is now a minor celebrity, after returning from war injured. Harper is just trying to keep her bar afloat, especially when problems start cropping up. When Brandon and Harper make a deal they might just find themselves both winning. Find the official description on Goodreads.

This book definitely contains some life lessons that just resonate within a person. It's amazing to see both Harper and Brandon learn these lessons or put them into action and grow. It was a wonderful feeling and I'd like to take some of their lessons into play in my own life.

This book was hard to read at times. There were certain things that came up that made me sad, and the laughs that I did enjoy during this book were tempered by the things that were hanging over the characters. So it was hard to read because I knew it was affecting me emotionally.

The plot of Game Changer was beautiful and really well done. Melissa Cutler has created another wonderful addition to the Bomb Squad series and I cannot wait to see who's next!

Bellevue Bullies #2

Things are heating up for the Sinclair boys! With one already in the NHL, Jayden Sinclair is hoping to be next!

This has been the toughest year of my life. I watched my brother go into the draft without me, my mom got divorced, and the weight of my family’s issues is heavy on my shoulders. I feel like it’s my job to fix everything while working my butt off in school and trying to make my game better. I have to go into the draft. It will give my family the support they need, and it will prove that I’m good enough. But to get there, I have to show I can be the best captain for the Bellevue Bullies. The spot is mine—no one can take it. First though, Jude is making me go on a brother’s weekend. Innocent enough, I guess…until I see her. She’s the biggest competitor I’ve ever faced. Not only for my spot but also my heart. It’s hard to ignore someone like Baylor Moore.

***

I don’t lose. I can’t. My dad has bred me to be the best in anything I do. I am driven, I am smart, and I am going to be the first woman in the National Hockey League. No two ways about it. I’ve worked too hard. I’ve been through too much not to have what I want. I know I can do it. I will make my dad proud, and no one will stand in the way of that. That is, until I let him in. He scares me. He makes me feel. And he could very well be the one person who can make me want more than just to win.

We both have the same goal. Victory. But how do you compete against the person you want to win? It’s not easy. Love isn’t something you can control. It isn’t like a puck that can be handled by a stick. No, it has a mind of its own and does what it wants.

Neither of us saw it coming, and we really don’t know if there is a way to score, especially when you’re being Clipped by Love.

Review:

I knew I would love the Sinclair Brothers even more as we read more and more about them and this is so true. It was wonderful to see the relationships between the Sinclair family and specifically the Sinclair brothers. But while I'm talking about characters Baylor was certainly a unique female, and not one that you see a lot in hockey romances. So I loved seeing her grow and change a bit, but still hold tight to that goal and work hard for it. I couldn't help but cheer both her and Jayden on.

There were so many things that happened including Baylor and Jayden fighting for themselves and the NHL. It was something that they had to do a bit separately but also together and I enjoyed seeing this play out in Clipped by Love.

I have to say that there were lots of things I loved about this book, from the writing, to the characters, to the hockey. I can't think of one thing I did not enjoy in this book. Especially because we finally get to witness the wedding of Jude and Claire as well as see some familiar Assassins' faces.

Underground Serial by Cassandra Carr

Underground Serial
by Cassandra Carr
Genre: Black Ops/Military, Action, Suspense

Off the Grid, Underground 1- The seemingly impossible has happened. The unthinkable. Those I trusted most have betrayed me. I’m a hockey player, and gave control of my finances to my parents so I could concentrate on my game. Big mistake. They stole from me, bankrupted me, in fact. And then someone come looking for money I don’t have and I made a terrible mistake; one that will haunt me forever.
But now someone has found me and offered a new start. I would no longer be a hockey player, I wouldn’t even be an actual person, totally off the grid. I’d be a shadow, fighting crime for an organization that’s underground, literally. Do I want that life?
If I go back, what kind of life would I have? Probably one in prison orange. The choice to join Underground is painful, but necessary. As my hockey coach always said, though, pain is weakness leaving the body. I will not be powerless ever again.

Creating Slapshot:
I’ve left my old life behind and officially joined Underground. It appears no one knows where I am or even if I’m still alive. I don’t know how I feel about that. My friends thinking I’m dead leaves a hole in my heart, but I’ll drive myself crazy if I obsess about it. So rather than allowing myself to wallow in self-pity or anger about what’s happened, I’m throwing all my energy into training. You would think that whole “elite athlete” thing would make everything easier, but all these new techniques I need to master—hand-to-hand combat, weapons training, surveillance procedures—are kicking my ass.
For my whole life, I’ve only had one identity. Ethan, hockey player. Now that sense of self is gone forever, slowly being replaced by my new identity, Slapshot. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe this transformation. But the more I find out about the world around me, the problems I ignored for the most part as I played a game for an obscene amount of money, the more I want to make a difference. This is not a game. It’s real life, and I have the chance to be a hero. It’s going to take everything I have—or have left, to do it.

Blurb for Underground Serial- Follow this 10-part serial throughout 2015 featuring Ethan, aka Slapshot, a hockey player whose life is ruined, forcing him to disappear forever. Ethan joins Underground, a black ops organization and is trained as a deadly operative. There, he meets Ciana, a woman with a dark past of her own. As Ethan and his Underground colleagues embark on dangerous missions worldwide, he finds a new purpose in life. But will his former problems come back to haunt him?

Review:

So I'm going to talk about these serials as if they were released in one book, otherwise there would probably be a lot of repetition or extremely short reviews. So I was actually shocked to find I enjoyed the serials part of it. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if it was one book but the serials give the author a unique chance. And they can use it or not. And so I was actually pleasantly surprised to discover that serials weren't all that bad.

Now that I've got that out of the way, I have to say that Ethan and the rest of the Underground group were very likable. Each has their history, and their strengths just as they have weaknesses. While you don't get a whole lot on the Underground group, you do learn a lot about Ethan and he's really down on his luck. Which just makes me cheer for him that much harder.

The plot itself was an interesting concept, and one that kept my attention as Ethan gets more and more involved.

Overall the Underground serials by Cassandra Carr are really good and something that would be good to read if you enjoy serials.

Bellevue Bullies #1

Boarded by Love by Toni Aleo

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Published: September 8th, 2014

Jude Sinclair here, hockey player for the Bellevue Bullies and lover of all ladies. Hockey’s in my blood, and not to sound full of myself, but I’m good at it…really good. The draft is within my reach—it’s mine to take—but that’s not the only reason people know my name. They know me because of my way with women. They know the score, and I aim to please. I just tend to stay away from repeat performances. In other words, I don’t do relationships beyond my family and friends. I’m happy with life. However, I should warn you that my story and how I see it playing out is about to change due to a certain redhead on campus.

She’s beautiful. Stunning. Breathtaking.

She’s my game changer.

He’s trouble from the moment I see him. I don’t know what I’m thinking, but from the moment I meet his gaze, I’m his. It’s a scary feeling.

I’ve never trusted anyone outside my aunt and uncle—and even that took months. I didn’t have it easy growing up. My mom was usually strung out, and she didn’t give me a second thought. Drugs and the men who paid her were more important to her. It was horrible, but I’m stronger today. Because of my past, security is what I need most. Money assures me that I can take care of myself today, tomorrow, and next month. I don’t want to ever be hungry or go without again, so I work hard for every penny.

Oh, by the way, I’m Claire Anderson. I’m a hard-studying sophomore at the University of Bellevue, dancer for the school dance team, and a burlesque dancer at a club, but that’s my secret.

You may think you know how our story ends, but you have no clue. It’s not easy falling in love… or living happily ever after. At first it may seem so, but when is anything worth having ever won without a fight?

Especially when you’re boarded by love.
