The Hurricane by R.J. Prescott Release Blitz

THE HURRICANE by R.J. Prescott (July 14, 2015; Forever E-Book; $0.99)
Emily McCarthy is living in fear of a dark and dangerous past. A gifted mathematician, she is little more than a hollow, broken shell, trying desperately to make ends meet long enough to finish her degree. Through an unlikely friendship with the aging, cantankerous owner of an old boxing gym, Em is thrown into the path of the most dangerous man that she has ever met.

Cormac "the Hurricane" O'Connell is cut, tattooed and dangerous. He is a lethal weapon with no safety and everyone is waiting for the misfire. He's never been knocked out before, but when he meet Em he falls, HARD. Unlike any other girl he's ever met, she doesn't want anything from him. Just being around her makes him want to be a better person. They are polar opposites who were never meant to find each other, but some things are just worth the fight.

REVIEW:

There were so many wonderful characters in The Hurricane. The main characters, Cormac and Emily of course, but they weren't the only ones that found their way into your heart. It was wonderful to watch the interaction between the two main characters as Cormac fought for Emily but it was also interesting to see the two interact with Danny, Keirnan and the others from the gym. They were great characters who had enough flaws to make them seem real.

We do get to understand why Emily is so guarded about making friends and why she fights so hard against getting romantically involved with Cormac. It's hard to watch as she has flashbacks but it's also something that as she becomes to overcome it and start living again, you feel pride in her.

Cormac didn't have it easy either and that comes up through the novel but it's nice to see him stand up and protect Emily from it.

While this book was serious, there were also a lot of moments of hilarity that helped to uplift you through the darker times in The Hurricane

The Hurricane was an amazing read and I couldn't put it down once I started!

EXCERPT:

He grabbed my hand and pulled me to a stop facing him. He moved in so close that our noses were almost touching.
“Tell me you can feel this. I need to know I’m not the only one,” he spoke gently.
“I feel it,” I whispered, staring at the ground. “But I’m not doing anything about it. Everything that you make me feel is completely overwhelming, and I can’t give you what you need, not even close. I don’t want to talk about why I am this way, but just offering you friendship is a big deal for me right now.”
I finished my rant feeling more desperate than ever. This big, strong, beautiful, terrifying man had feelings for me, but seriously how long would they last? I was getting better, but I was afraid of my own shadow most of the time. I was small, weak, and lacked any self-confidence. O’Connell was dangerous, addictive, and so sexy that I was consumed by lust every time we were in the same room together. He used his body like a weapon and the danger attracted women like a magnet. With that many women, all vying for his attention, what little charm I held for him would fade like mist in the morning sun. If I let him in, he had the power to break what little of me was left whole when I couldn’t keep him.
Reaching out one giant, scarred and calloused hand, he tucked a wayward curl behind my ear. He lifted my chin with his knuckle forcing me to meet his gentle gaze. He looked so happy and intense right now that I could feel my eyes welling up. I never thought that anyone would ever look at me like that.
“I know I’m scary and loud. I’m fucked up, and I’m gonna fuck up with you a lot because I’ve never done this before. I don’t date girls, I fuck them and walk away because that’s what they expect. It’s all they think I’m good for. I’m not smart like you, and I know I don’t deserve you. Right now, I’m dirt poor, but one day, I’m not gonna be. I will fight to make something better of myself, to be someone better. Someone you can be proud of. If you need time, then I’ll give you time. If you need friendship, then I’ll give you friendship. But you’re mine, and when the time is right, when you’re ready, I’m coming for you.”
I nodded, so close to tears I knew that if I tried to speak, I’d completely break down. I swallowed hard, and the tears fell anyway. O’Connell wiped them away with his thumb and gently pressed his big firm lips to mine. Just like that, my fears were forgotten. The kiss was gentle, but fireworks exploded all over my body. It was like he had invigorated every cell with life. The touch of his lips wasn’t enough to satisfy, only to feed my addiction. I knew in my head that I wasn’t ready for a relationship, but my body wanted to drown in the revelation that it could feel something other than cold, hunger, and pain. It was a kiss both chaste and pure and everything I hoped that my first kiss would be, because everything I gave to him, I gave freely. Slightly out of breath, our lips parted, and he rested his forehead back against mine.
“I’m gonna give you the fuckin world, baby,” he whispered against my lips.
He kissed me again quickly and grinning like a kid, threaded his fingers through mine.
“You know friends don’t hold hands,” I whispered, knowing that there was no way that I was letting go first.
“Huh,” he grunted. “Me and Kier hold hands all the time.”

Excerpt: Chapter 1
“What the hell is that?” The new patient in the ER had an erection almost the size of a man’s arm. It tented the sheet covering him, and I thanked my lucky stars that I wasn’t on the front lines in the triage area. I could still hear the giggles from behind a curtain.

“This one’s yours, Jules. I’m not touching that with a ten-foot pole.” My co-worker and best friend’s humor didn’t escape me. The two of us were working the graveyard shift, and from the look of it, Chris was not going to help. In fact, bringing all the nurses’ attention to the patient may have only hindered any progress. Fortunately, she decided to leave. “I’m pretty sure I have a patient who needs an enema. I think I’d rather work that end than the one you’ll be working on.”

I highly doubted that. Chris worked the male nurses better than strippers did metal poles.

“Everybody out!” I pointed my finger to the door, but no one moved. Their heads were peeking one over another, trying to catch a glimpse of the patient’s prominent injury. My mind was already running amok as I wondered what the heck was underneath that sheet. “This is not Grey’s Anatomy, people, so unless you’re helping I don’t want to see you.”

They finally scattered back to their duties. On Saturday nights, or should I say Sunday mornings, we usually got the weekend party leftovers, and most of our patients were passed out drunk, stoned, or heavily medicated. Comprehension in any of those states was minimal. This guy on the bed in front of me was totally out. His face was covered in paint – green, red, yellow, blue, you name it and it was there. What kind of a party had he gone to?

I peeled back the sheets with hesitation. The rest of his body was painted in the same mix of colors as his face. My gaze rested over his hip, where underneath the smeared paint I could make out the black lines of a tattoo, though its shape remained mysterious. I wondered whether the patient had any clothes on when he came in. I sighed and removed the sheet down to his knees. The nurse beside me had her mouth completely open and was focused on what first appeared to be a cannon – a huge cannon made of a cylinder that imprisoned the patient’s enlarged penis.
“Holy crap!” I said under my breath. How do you get your cock stuck in a pump?

Less Than Nothing by R.E. Blake

(Image found on Goodreads)
"I’ve been living by my wits for the last four months, and I’ve learned that you never back down when you’re protecting what’s yours, or the world will take everything from you." -R.E. Blake, Less Than Nothing

Sage has been living on the streets for a little while now and she's learned a lot of lessons, but most importantly protect her spot, or else her street musician gig may be up. But then Derek invades her territory and she's frustrated. But when he offers her a deal that will make more money for her how can she refuse? And then when he asks her to go to New York, what else can she do? But secrets are hidden and they'll come into the light one way or another. Can Sage and Derek ride them out or will all their dreams be for nothing? Find the official description on Goodreads.

I found that the style of writing really drew readers in, grabbed their attention and held it. It was really easy to make connections with Sage at least, if only because of one personality trait or another. The narration was lively but it wasn't super peppy and it was amusing to boot. Sage's internal monologue could keep readers amused for days on end.

Then there were the difficult truths. Especially about different attitudes towards homelessness. Admittedly we don't really have any homeless(or none that I know of) in my small town. But I never really thought about how homelessness was perceived or how they were treated. So seeing through Sage's eyes and the different situations that both Sage and Derek find themselves in was wonderful, and attitude changing.

Then there's the fact that Sage could be wallowing in self-pity or working in other ways to help herself survive. But she doesn't. Or at least not often(for the self-pitying I mean). This made her a really good character to read because I don't know about you but people who go why me? And poor me all the time can be a bit annoying.

Now that I've chatted on about Sage, let's get on to Derek. I definitely was a fan of him in the beginning but started wavering towards the middle and now I'm not sure what to think. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book if only to see what happens and how Derek changes or doesn't.

I was very much shocked several times in this book, mostly towards the ends. There were a few twists that I did not see coming and I almost gasped when they were revealed.

Less than Nothing was a great read, one that I would be happy to read again.

Idolism by Marcus Herzig

(Image found on Goodreads)
"So, although Julian always claimed not to be religious himself, I didn't believe a single word of it." -Marcus Herzig, Idolism

Julian and his friends rise to fame is bumpy. Mostly because Julian just can't help but stir up controversy. But when the time comes to choose, will they give up who they are? or will the bonds of friendship hold true? Find the official description on  Goodreads.

Idolism deals with a topic almost guaranteed to stir up controversy; Religion. But Marcus Herzig handles the topic carefully and I didn't really find anything that could annoy people who are religious. It seemed to present the different believes of the characters as their own believes and didn't put down other religions in order to put one religion before the other. He handled the religious aspect carefully and with respect. Throughout the book, he presents character's opinions as just that, opinions, not fact. It kept things from becoming too harsh or frustrating to the readers.

The chapters were short and narrated by different characters. There were four or five who narrated the book and each chapter saw a different character from the previous chapter speaking. Strangely we never get a chapter from Julian. This made him much more mysterious and his actions much more unexplained and difficult to anticipate. It lent an air of surprise to the book and more specifically his actions. However because of the shortness of many of the chapters and the amount of characters I didn't feel as deep a connection with the characters as I usually would. I did enjoy hearing their different voices and things like that but I didn't feel as if I was in the book, more like I was reading it. If you get what I mean. One thing I didn't really like was that the chapters tended to start with a short reiteration of what had happened before but from a different point of view. While it gave readers a different outlook on things, it could also be annoying and redundant.

Julian was extremely intelligent and many times explained what he meant if he made a comment that people might be questioning. However as we get deeper into the book, it seemed as if his explanations were becoming more like lectures. Some of them were interesting but others I found myself wanting to skim over after a while because they seemed to be going too long or weren't keeping my attention.

Idolism seemed to draw connections between religion and fame, some more obvious, while others were less so. But reading the book, I could understand the reasoning behind these connections and in some ways they seem familiar at least when viewed within the context of this book.

Idolism is a solid book meant to make readers think. At times you'll find yourself wishing things were a bit more interesting but then it picks up a bit and you'll be reading on easily.

Fast Track by Julie Garwood

(Image found on Goodreads)
"Aiden smelled divine when he wrapped his arms around her, and she tried not to react."-Julie Garwood, Fast Track
WARNING: This book contains sexual content and is not for younger readers.

Cordelia is left alone to deal with a secret her father revealed on his deathbed. And she's finally decided to get over her crush on her best friend's brother who has been utterly clueless about it. But when danger becomes the norm in Cordelia's life will Aiden finally realize that she's the one for him? Read the official description on Goodreads.

Okay, so I am going to say that I have read Julie Garwood's books before. Only the Buchanon-Renard series really so when I found this book on NetGalley I couldn't resist! And I was lucky enough to be allowed to receive a copy! So yay! But I'm also familiar with the characters and whatnot so it made Fast Track feel familiar while at the same time being new and exciting if you can understand that. The characters in this book I've met before but they've usually been more so in the background than the forefront and you didn't really get an in-depth look at them. It was great to read Fast Track and get more in depth with them as characters, learning what makes them tick and how their minds work.

Not only was it great to see familiar characters, Julie Garwood has a nice flow and incorporates emotions into her characters. Readers can't help but fall in love as these two did, and they can't resist empathizing with Cordie and Aiden both. You'd think that the book would be full of action, adrenaline and sadness but Julie Garwood incorporated humour into Fast Track as well.

If you haven't read any of the Buchanon-Renard series, the books can be read as standalones but it's always more interesting to read the series. I found I was able to connect more with the characters and found myself looking forward to interactions that Aiden and Cordie had with the other characters because I know them through previous books.

Fast Track will be released July 29th, 2014 and I strongly suggest you give it a read!
