Between Twilight and Midnight(Guest Post by Lindsay Marie Miller)!

Guest Post: Lindsay Marie Miller
Between Twilight and Midnight

Art. For years, I’ve been defining the term as the complete freedom of human expression. No walls. No boundaries. No box to be locked inside of.

Art is an escape, an expression, an un-objective, un-restrictive, un-paralleled path to the unknown and the known, the forgotten and the re-discovered, the could have happened and the never will. Writing is only one faction, one subset, one category of art. But it is the part of that mystical wonderland that I love the most.

Why do I adore words so much? Maybe because they came to me first. I never sought out stories and characters and plotlines. I never asked for all of these voices in my head. Even as a child, the rambling heroines and colorful caricatures chased me in the daytime and hours into the night, spinning so loudly and obnoxiously in my head, willing me to listen, willing me to write.

When I was in grade school, I thought everyone watched a movie in their mind before falling asleep at night. In those hours between twilight and midnight, my imagination would come alive, revealing fantasies, possibilities, and pipe dreams. I never knew that one day, my mind would turn into a battle ground, where characters come dressed in metallic armor, equipped with guns and knives, ready to showcase their strengths and weaknesses or even take each other on, all to prove that their story deserves to be told first.

I won’t lie. All of these characters have spoken to me in different ways, and all of their stories deserve to be told. In many ways, they are my family, these voices in my head. But those that I find the most captivating, most unique, most intriguing will always be told first.

So, I am left shuffling characters around in my head like a general manager selecting players for an athletic team, constantly signing, trading, and cutting. Sometimes, it can feel like a sickness, overpowering my head until it aches. If only I had more time, more pages, more ink to write out every character’s story, who had ever graced me with their presence in my mind.

But there never seems to be enough time, and my pens are always running out of ink. Yet, I cannot let a single character go without at least jotting down a general description. Because each have experienced danger, love, loss, terror, and, ultimately, acceptance.

My characters are just like you and me. They are real people, though not in the literal sense. It is their emotions, their trials, their enduring will, and their own unique, original voice that brings life to their inert state of being. Forrest Gump may only exist within the confines of a fictional realm, but for many, it is his innocence, his Southern drawl, his character, his voice, that allows him to transcend into a state of immortality. Because his story will live on forever. The same goes for Elizabeth Bennet, Atticus Finch, Dorothy Gale, Rocky Balboa, or whoever first allowed you to connect with a force beyond our own natural world.

Characters are important. Characters are real, and characters most definitely matter.

While the physical world around us remains reliant, spinning on its axis with perfectly calculated precision, the fantasy world, where the dreamers go to play, the artists go to create, and all characters live into perpetuity, will always bring color to those who wish to step outside of the box, to view the world as more than a round planet, floating in the Milky Way, and to remind all of us that every character counts.

In art. In fiction. In life.

So, to answer my earlier question - why do I adore words so much?

Because of you.

Delayed Penalty by Sophia Henry Blog Tour!

DELAYED PENALTY
Pilots Hockey #1
Sophia Henry
Releasing Sept 1st, 2015

She closed her heart long ago. He
just wants to open her mind. For fans of Toni Aleo and Sawyer Bennett, the
debut of Sophia Henry’s red-hot Detroit Pilots series introduces a hockey team
full of complicated men who fight for love.

Auden Berezin is used to losing
people: her father, her mother, her first love. Now, just
when she believes those childhood wounds are finally healing, she loses
something else: the soccer scholarship that was her ticket to college.
Scrambling to earn tuition money, she’s relieved to find a gig translating for
a Russian minor-league hockey player—until she realizes that he’s the same
dangerously sexy jerk who propositioned her at the bar the night before.

Equal parts muscle and scar tissue,
Aleksandr Varenkov knows about trauma. Maybe that’s what draws him to Auden. He
also lost his family too young, and he channeled the pain into his passions:
first hockey, then vodka and women. But all that seems to just melt away the
instant he kisses Auden and feels a jolt of desire as sudden and surprising as
a hard check on the ice.

After everything she’s been through,
Auden can’t bring herself to trust any man, let alone a hot-headed puck jockey
with a bad reputation. Aleksandr just hopes she’ll give him a chance—long
enough to prove he’s finally met the one who makes him want to change.

REVIEW:

There were some laughs in this book as well as romance, and pain. Delayed Penalty includes it all. One thing that I really enjoyed was the descriptions. They were detailed enough to give you the setting and characters but not detailed enough to become overly much or boring.

The character building and relationship building was interesting to watch. Auden never let anyone including Aleksandr walk all over her and Aleksandr had his sweet moments while also being a big pain in the butt at times.

The plot followed along at a decent pace and I enjoyed the little conversations that were slipped in as well as learning what made each character tick.

The ending was very beautiful and I really enjoyed both Sophia Henry's writing style and the plot and characters of Delayed Penalty.

A Fine Line by Jeanine Binder!

(Image found on Goodreads)

Lori never clued into how dirty the undercover job he had taken was until he ran into Dr. Leigh Matthews in the emergency room. And luckily enough for him she didn't seem to mind his job. But Lori's getting close to shutting the largest drug operation in the country down and some people will do anything to stop it. Find the official description on Goodreads.

The writing in A Fine Line was easy enough to follow. It kept things interesting without going over the top. In other words it was realistic. I didn't really have anything that stood out about the writing that prevented me from enjoying reading this book.

And the characters were also an interesting mix. Lori certainly shows that money doesn't make happiness. He also defies expectations. You don't really expect someone who's wealthy to be working as a cop. Not that that probably doesn't happen but I mean it's a bit unusual. And Leigh was an interesting female character. She certainly was independent but still didn't fight the draw she had to Lori.

The ending was good, a mix of feelings but the lead up to it certainly had your heart in your throat and fear choking you if that wasn't enough.

Jeanine Binder has created a great book!

Live Like You Mean It by Ava Stone

(Image found via Goodreads)

Brody is enjoying the stereotypical rockstar lifestyle and isn't looking to slow down anytime soon. But he meets Leah, struggling single mom and she falls for him. But will Brody feel the same? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Live Like You Mean It was told from the first person perspective. It was a good choice and the author wrote the book really well. The characters were well created and easily able to be understood or at least empathized with. Some you felt more for than others. It was very easy to get intertwined into the character's lives. There were some points where you were disappointed in characters, and that's what made the book interesting to read. You were invested in the characters and their lives.

The plot was also well done. It moved at a good pace and was not slow at any point. Live Like You Mean It was a good book that was well written.

Just Say Yes by Jen Andrews

(Image found on Goodreads)
"What had gone so horribly wrong?"-Jen Andrews, Just Say Yes

Zoey and Andy should be happy, but when a freak accident causes Andy to withdraw a bit, Zoey is having a difficult time. Especially while away on vacation. But she finds a horse ranch and it helps her gather her thoughts, as well as figuring things out. She knows that Andy and her can come through this. But when yet another bomb is dropped on them, can they survive? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Okay, may I just really say that the freak accident is really imaginative and freakish? Like that is not something I would honestly believe if I heard it on the TV or the web. So that was really interesting and I've love the uniqueness of the accident.

And the reactions were interesting. I didn't even think about how Andy could react especially with his history. So I was a bit shocked when he acted how he did. But I did sort of understand? Anyway, both characters were interesting and I enjoyed the interactions as well as the willingness to work things out they both seem to have.

I was really happy for most of the book but then there was several shockers(although one less shocking than the others) and I just honestly couldn't believe it. It was difficult and took away my happy mood really quickly. This book will leave shocked, annoyed and upset at certain times and sometimes all at the same time.

Just Say Yes certainly lives up to the expectations I was left with from The Reason and even possibly surpasses it.

Laces and Lace by Toni Aleo

(Image found on Goodreads)

Lacey and Karson were perfect together. But when Karson makes a decision to leave, both suffer for nine years. When fate brings them back together, Karson is determined that this time no one will be the cause of him losing Lacey ever again. But Lacey still has a few doubts. Find the official description on Goodreads

Receiving a copy of Laces and Lace gave me an excuse to re-read Tangled in the Laces and boy had I forgotten what an adventure that was. Emotional adventure I mean. Wow.And Laces and Lace is no different. That is one emotional journey and I constantly found myself either smiling or with tears in my eyes.

I loved all of the interactions in this book both with familiar and new characters. It just brought back this feeling of family that I always love about the Assassins books. I love that even a you’re reading you can just feel this sense of family and love that always makes you fell part of it.

I have to admit that I wasn’t a fan of JT at the beginning but now I just might be interested in seeing his story be told. So that will be another adventure.

I love that each character has a difficult journey to get to their happy ever after and it may hurt but they always do. And the journeys are all different. Each one is new and exciting.

Laces and Lace was an amazing book in an amazing series by an amazing author. If you haven’t already you should certainly check out Toni Aleo and her books!

In the Zone by Catherine Gayle

(Image found on Goodreads)
"I hadn't been able to get her off my mind in the months since that night." -Catherine Gayle, In The Zone

Keith Burns, defense man for the Portland Storm, has been feeling lonely for the last few months. When he has a one night stand, not even finding out the woman's name, he has a hard time getting her out of his mind. When he comes across her months later, he is determined to convince her to try out a relationship with him. But when his past comes up will he be able to let go of the guilt or will it eat him alive? Find the official description on Goodreads.

I've got to say that I enjoyed all of the characters in the Portland Storm series. They all have their differences and yet they come together as a family. It's beautiful to see the interactions and whatnot between the team, their women and family. Burnzie is a well constructed character and I really enjoyed finding out more about him and seeing his interactions. I also loved Brie. She felt like a real person and one that I can easily get along with. It was marvelous! (Plus Burnzie is from my home province, gotta love that!)

The plot kept things interesting and moving along nicely. It was great to see both characters grow and move together towards a brighter future.

The book had me on an emotional roller coaster and as weird as it sounds, I enjoyed it. They had their difficulties but managed to move past them. It was just a great story, once that I enjoyed.

Catherine Gayle has once more created a book that entrances the reader and draws them into the family that is the Portland Storm series. If you love sports romance than you need to check this series out!

Black Moon Draw by Lizzy Ford

(Image found on Goodreads)
"Opening my eyes, I’m not surprised to see I haven’t been magically transported back to
my home." -Lizzy Ford, Black Moon Draw

A reader brought into a book world-literally. And when she arrives, it's to find that the book world isn't always the best world. Especially when that world becomes more and more real while it seems her world falls away. Naia finds herself in a world where everything is very different from her world. Fighting wars and falling in love weren't in her plan when she awoke in this world but she find herself doing both anyway. But will she give up her world for his? Or will the choice be taken from her? Find the official description on Goodreads.

I really connected with Naia and her love of books. Especially how she uses them to escape and she was a really good character even if you felt like shaking her and telling her to wake up and stop being in denial.

I don't tend to read a lot of fantasy but I enjoyed the world that Lizzy Ford created. It was interesting and learning all the little things about it was a wonderful experience. But I do have to admit that I hate the politics of the thing. But that's just my personal opinion, I'm not a big fan of politics and plots.

Then there was the fact that we get different perspectives, from the two main characters. This allowed readers to get a glimpse at both ways of thinking and find out that maybe everyone isn't always how they seemed. It was invigorating and an amazing journey.

This book had me in pain(all emotional) and also smiling largely. I enjoyed reading it and found myself sneaking away every chance I could to read it.

I liked Black Moon Draw a lot and it had an intriguing plot that sometimes I wish was real. So take a chance and read this fantasy book!

New Point by Olivia Luck

(Image found on Goodreads)
"Yes, he's that hot." -Olivia Luck, New Point

Zoe has been the center of media attention for far too long. Especially when she just wants to forget. In an attempt to change her life for the better, she moves down to New Point, a town her parents enjoyed. When she bumps into Miles, everything seems to be getting much better. But when her past comes out will she be able to move on? Or will it hold her back forever? Find the official description on Goodreads.

New Point, for the most part, was actually a lighter read than books I've been reading sometimes recently. Many of the interactions between Zoe and Miles are light, carefree, with a little bit of flirting. It's fun. They act like children or at least with the carefreeness of children and that was fun to witness, and it kept things from feeling as if they were too much to handle.

The prologue was short and mysterious. Which really grabbed my attention. It made me want to read more to find out about what happened to Zoe.

Throughout New Point, we get little glimpses of Zoe's past before getting the big picture. There's enough there to guess what Zoe went through and be proud of how strong she's been. It's definitely not a pretty story and this made me appreciate the lightness that Zoe seemed to have with Miles especially.

The plot moved along nicely, although sometimes you might think it was crawling. In reality it was just setting things up to bring up the drama.

I definitely think New Point was a great read. It was lighthearted, and fun for the most part with enough downs to put things into perspective. If you haven't already, you should buy New Point. It was released on September 10th, 2014.

Double Major by Catherine Gayle

(Image found on Goodreads)
"He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat, and a rush of peace washed through me." -Catherine Gayle, Double Major

It's Draft Day for the NHL but for the Portland Storm team, it's something much more. It's time to see two of their own married. But with the possibility of teammates getting traded, new players being drafted and so much more, can they come together as a team to celebrate the nuptials? Find the official description on Goodreads.

So, the first thing I'm going to point out is that we get to hear things from the perspectives of all our favorite characters, some newer than others but all loved just the same(especially Babs). I loved that it wasn't just focused on two characters as it seems to fit this book the best. It's meant to be a sort of epilogue from the other books and I'm really glad that Catherine Gayle chose to write from different perspectives. I definitely enjoyed the depth it gave to the story.

There's also this feeling of happiness but underlying that is a sense of dread. After all with it being draft day, players could get traded. So, I almost didn't want to read more just because of that possibility, but while reading Double Major I suffered, there were also happy moments. So, I felt like it made things worth it to just experience and see the joy the couples are experiencing for the most part.

It was also a chance to see that even after the couples of previous books are together, it's not always perfect, and it's not always a fairy tale. This made the characters seem even more real to me as I read along and I felt that it was marvelous to see the troubles that they were going through but also to see that they work things out. Not to mention we got updates on how everyone was doing and where everyone was.

Throughout Double Major there were a mixture of emotions. And I felt all of the emotions that the characters were. And without going into too much depth, I was proud of the characters. I feel like they, especially two of them, made the right decision even if it was hard and my inner fangirl was crying, one that will hopefully affect the future positively.

And we also got some more time with Nicky. I've kind of felt like he's sort of been on the outskirts of my notice many times because we don't get to see him a whole lot in the books but I'm glad that he was brought forward in this novella. I'm really hopeful that someday we'll get his story and get to learn even more about him than we did in Double Major.

Once more Catherine Gayle has created an emotional, amazing hockey romance and I am so excited to see where she goes from here. I can't wait to see more of the Portland Storm either.

Cade by V.A. Dold

(Image found on Goodreads)
“When she took his hand, his heart skipped a beat.” -V.A. Dold, Cade

Anna James has finally divorced her husband and moved to New Orleans, ready for a fresh start. What she doesn’t expect is to meet the man of her dreams, literally. For the past five years, Cade and Anna have been sharing dreams and so it comes as a shock to meet him in real life. Cade is a shifter, and has known about possibly having a mate but when he finally meets Anna, after missing her earlier, he can’t help but feel lucky. But fate has a plan and when Anna’s ex-husband brings trouble down on her, Cade is determined to keep his mate safe. But will he be able to protect her without scaring her away? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Cade was a good, strong read. It contained characters that seemed real as you and me, and the fact that we were given Anna's past(or at least some of it) as well as the dreams before she actually physically met Cade let the readers gain an insight into her personality. Although I don't agree with her reasoning for staying with her ex-husband I could at least understand them. We also can't forget that she also wasn't crazy skinny. I know, I know, not every book character is extremely thin or whatnot but it feels nice to have a women who has curves and we see the effects of society on her because of the fact she's not always comfortable in her own body. Then we were also introduced to Cade, *sigh*. He's the perfect guy, and reader's inner romantic will definitely be doing a lot of sighing over him.

There were also all kinds of different moments. There were drama filled moments(mostly with Anna's ex), romantic moments, and fun, amusing ones as well. I especially loved the interactions between the Le Beau family. There were a lot of moments that you just had to laugh or smile foolishly because of something that happened. It made for a fun read that kept the reader interested and motivated to keep reading.

Cade was a great read, and I would definitely enjoy reading it again. I cannot wait to read Simon, as there was a bit of a lead up in Cade as well as the fact that we met Simon and his story made want to learn more about him.

Idolism by Marcus Herzig

(Image found on Goodreads)
"So, although Julian always claimed not to be religious himself, I didn't believe a single word of it." -Marcus Herzig, Idolism

Julian and his friends rise to fame is bumpy. Mostly because Julian just can't help but stir up controversy. But when the time comes to choose, will they give up who they are? or will the bonds of friendship hold true? Find the official description on  Goodreads.

Idolism deals with a topic almost guaranteed to stir up controversy; Religion. But Marcus Herzig handles the topic carefully and I didn't really find anything that could annoy people who are religious. It seemed to present the different believes of the characters as their own believes and didn't put down other religions in order to put one religion before the other. He handled the religious aspect carefully and with respect. Throughout the book, he presents character's opinions as just that, opinions, not fact. It kept things from becoming too harsh or frustrating to the readers.

The chapters were short and narrated by different characters. There were four or five who narrated the book and each chapter saw a different character from the previous chapter speaking. Strangely we never get a chapter from Julian. This made him much more mysterious and his actions much more unexplained and difficult to anticipate. It lent an air of surprise to the book and more specifically his actions. However because of the shortness of many of the chapters and the amount of characters I didn't feel as deep a connection with the characters as I usually would. I did enjoy hearing their different voices and things like that but I didn't feel as if I was in the book, more like I was reading it. If you get what I mean. One thing I didn't really like was that the chapters tended to start with a short reiteration of what had happened before but from a different point of view. While it gave readers a different outlook on things, it could also be annoying and redundant.

Julian was extremely intelligent and many times explained what he meant if he made a comment that people might be questioning. However as we get deeper into the book, it seemed as if his explanations were becoming more like lectures. Some of them were interesting but others I found myself wanting to skim over after a while because they seemed to be going too long or weren't keeping my attention.

Idolism seemed to draw connections between religion and fame, some more obvious, while others were less so. But reading the book, I could understand the reasoning behind these connections and in some ways they seem familiar at least when viewed within the context of this book.

Idolism is a solid book meant to make readers think. At times you'll find yourself wishing things were a bit more interesting but then it picks up a bit and you'll be reading on easily.

Family Portrait Tour Stop!

 Changes
Adriana Banovic’s 15th birthday sucked! She got fired after eight years of playing Shayanne Montgomery on the #1 soap in the country, found out that her family was on the verge of bankruptcy and worst of all, forced to return to Westwood Academy. Her only saving grace was a chance glance at dreamy mystery boy Haze Lyndon. Armed with only his picture and a determination to find him—even if it means turning Los Angeles over on its ass.

In this new adult novel you'll meet Robin Banovic, Adriana's father; financially challenged, dealing with the death of a family member and his brother's disappearance. You'll meet Savannah DaCosta aka Savi, mother/manager; Savi enjoys the life her rock star daughter Leighann has provided. When Leighann makes a choice to end her career, Savi sees it as a personal attack.

You'll meet college boy Haze Lyndon; New to Los Angeles, Haze soon realizes how quickly money changes hands in the City of Angels. Will he return to questionable ways to survive or go back to the safety of his family in Wisconsin?

Excerpt:
Down the hall, Adriana waited for her turn to audition. The place still had lots of girls even though the process seemed to be going by quickly. She got up to stretch her legs and get some water at the water fountain down the hall.
She noticed a photo shoot taking place in the room adjacent to the water fountain. Curious, she headed toward the window and peered through the glass.
Everything was random, large floodlights illuminated a gray backdrop cloth. The room was divided into two parts by a portable screen room divider with an opening at either end. The dimly lit back room was closest to the room entrance; there was a table with a laptop and camera equipment, story boards, a notebook and other items.
Adriana spotted the photographer, a handsome-ish petite Italian talking to his butch assistant, dressed all in black. She was about to walk away when she spotted Haze. Her eyes fixated on him. He emerged wearing jeans and a graphic tee. Adriana was simply mesmerized by him. He was the handsomest man she had ever seen. She entered the room for a closer look. ‘Was he for real?’
The photographer instructed Haze on the next set-up. At first no one noticed Adriana as she stood in the shadows. She was unable to take her eyes off him. ‘Who is he?’ she wondered.
The photographer received his freshly reloaded camera from his assistant. Just then Adriana noticed a Polaroid of Haze on the floor; she picked it up and stared at it. Her fingers traced his smile. His brown eyes were lit up, and a naughty but sweet smile blanketed his face. Adriana felt her inside get soft and mushy; she felt a flash of heat and excitement. This was new territory for her. Whoever he was, she knew she would never forget him.
The butch assistant interrupted her thoughts with a disapproving tone. “What are you doing in here?!”
Adriana was startled.
“You're not supposed to be in here. This is a closed shoot! Get out!”

Adriana slipped the picture into her pocket, then left.

The Banovic Siblings

College boy Kevin Banovic’s casual affair with Savi DaCosta suited him perfectly. Things change when he finds out that Savi is his mom’s high school bestie. When Kevin tries to end their affair, Savi blackmails him. After Kevin rescues Savi’s stepdaughter, L’Wren, from her abusive boyfriend, he can’t stop thinking about her. He must find a way to handle Savi, protect L’Wren, and keep his sanity.

Bad girl Adriana Banovic is pleased with herself for getting her nemesis expelled from Westwood Academy. As feelings between her and her latest victim Haze Lyndon escalate, an unexpected rival discovers her secret and threatens to expose her. With emotions on the line, will her new rival beat her at her own game or end up another casualty of Adriana’s wrath?

Zax Banovic has it all. Tall and handsome, he’s an academic genius, with a killer smile and a heart of gold. When his best friend gets into trouble, he feels responsible and covers for him. But his best friend is not as honorable and has other plans for Zax.

The Banovic Siblings learn that blackmail is a gift that keeps on giving.

Bastard’s Brew

When L'Wren's ex-boyfriend Jeff suddenly disappears, she turns to Kevin to help her find him. With one phone call, Kevin makes sure that Jeff stays hidden and that L'Wren's heart is broken, leaving the door open for Kevin to pursue her. But Kevin is not as free as L'Wren thinks; she is in the dark about his affair with her stepmother, Savi. Savi constantly reminds Kevin of his devious ways and uses their secret to keep him as her toyfriend.

“You don’t deserve to be loved, and you don’t deserve to be happy. You and I are the same … we’re broken inside. Everything we touch, we destroy. We don’t get happily ever after … we don’t get to ride off into the sunset. You know who gets that? L’Wren … she gets it, she gets the guy, and she deserves a decent guy.”- Savi

Kevin desires to be the man that L'Wren deserves, but before he can assume the role of white knight, he brews one last plan to get rid of Savi for good. Will L'Wren, the innocent victim in their twisted game, become a casualty?

Kevin may have sold his body to the devil in stilettos, but he'd be damned if he let her have his heart.

There's a mother who will do anything to help/keep her kids safe and a mobster as well as a gangster. That's pretty much guaranteed to cause trouble of the gun toting kind. Not only that but the plot is fascinating.
