EXCERPT:

Chapter 1

‘Harder!’ he screams in desperation. ‘Harder!’
But his voice breaks down, strangled and hoarse. His eyes are wide open in an all-out pre-orgasmic rapture. His red face is wrinkled and strained. His perfect pink designer shirt is now rumpled and covered with sweat stains. A few little white and pink buttons are missing – they are probably somewhere on the floor together with my dress and G-string. His shiny-to-a-fault patent leathers point at the ceiling, their heels digging convulsively into the floor. He covers my cramped hands with his, to strengthen my grip, making the pulsating veins on his neck swell even more. Then he utters a wild growl and shuts his eyes. His body goes limp under my thighs.
Oh crap. Why does it always have to be me?
His face looks deathly pale against the red velvet couch. His lifeless body is still. It seems he is not breathing. I roll my eyes, wiping the sweat off my forehead.
Shit! I hope I haven’t killed him for real…
I jump off the couch, grab his shirt, and start shaking him. The visions flash through my mind. The handcuffs tighten around mywrists, the red and blue flashes light my regretful face in the blackness of the night as the officer pushes me down into a police car, the Agent Evelyn Salt expression on my face mirrored in the one-way glass of the interrogation room…
Have I been watching too many action films? Instead of picturing myself as Angelina, I should be thinking about what to do with the weirdo... or rather with his body… Shit! Shit! Shit!
‘Hmm…’ he wheezes, his eyes still closed. I let go of his shirt and exhale.
‘Hey…’ Obviously, I don’t remember his name.
‘Hey… wake up.’
He frowns, still faint. ‘Mom… Don’t do it… Mom, please – let’s not do it…’
I open my mouth to reason, then stop short, take a deep breath and slap him instead. He opens his eyes. ‘Are you okay?’ I say, loud and slow. ‘Shall we have a break and get a drink, or…’
‘No! Please don’t stop, Julia.’ He clings to my shoulders. His face winces. ‘I’m good. I’m good. Don’t stop.’

“It’s my best shot. Only one of us is walking away from this and right now my upper hand is that Marcus thinks it will be him.”
Dennis stepped off the cage and blew out a long breath. “She doesn’t know, does she?”
“No. It’s for the best. Ana thinks we’re planning how we move forward on this together.”
Over the last couple of weeks, the pieces of the puzzle had slowly been slotting into place, and more and more I was realizing it was something set into motion a long time ago.
“If shit goes south, I need to know you’ll protect her. Even if it means getting her out of Chastity Falls. She’d never leave if I asked her to, she’s stubborn and she thinks we’re in this together.”
I hated lying to Ana, but it was better for her to draw her own conclusions than for me to admit that only one of us could walk away from this—Marcus or me. It would crush her. I couldn’t do it to her. To us.
“You know I will, but does it have to go down like this?” Dennis’ Adam’s apple bobbed and the desperation in his voice caught me off guard. “Is there no other way? Maybe we could go to someone for help?”
Scrubbing a hand through my hair I leaned back against the lockers and said, “This is the only way. We both know it. This is exactly the way Marcus planned it.”
The door swung open and the rest of the team filed in. I threw Dennis a look that I hope conveyed my gratitude.
I owed him my life.
I just hoped I didn’t have to pay up.

Shadow of Doubt by P.A. DePaul Blog Tour!

35fe1-add-to-goodreads-button31button synopsis
The new SBG novel from the author of Exchange of Fire.
When her secretly filmed tryst shows up on the internet, Michelle Alger goes on the run. She has no choice. Not only was her one-night stand the son of a US senator, but he’s been murdered—and she’s the number one suspect. With both the senator and an avenging drug lord on her trail, her life is in danger. There’s only man she can trust. He saved her once, but will he still be her hero six years later?

Captain Jeremy Malone and the rest of Delta Squad have the senator’s order: find the mystery woman who killed my son. But to Jeremy, she’s no mystery. Six years ago his team of Green Berets rescued her from the torturous clutches of a Colombian cartel, and he’s never forgotten her. His personal and covert mission: find Michelle before anyone else. When he and Michelle do meet again, the sparks are explosive and consuming. They’re also dangerous as hell.

Because with each new bit of evidence, Jeremy suspects that Michelle’s innocence may be a ruse—a beautiful trap set by a woman who has even more secrets yet to bare.

Review:

In both SBG books there is never really a dull moment. And that's good if that's what you're looking for. If there aren't crazy, action filled moments then there are extremely difficult, emotional ones. It keeps your heart rate or your emotions up and never lets go until the end. And even then you know that more is coming and cannot wait until the next book.

We also learned more about the team and how they work as a family. Which is great because you're forming connections with all of the different characters, not just the ones that have been featured in a novel or are being featured in a novel.

There were plenty of what the heck moments. Not gonna lie. It seemed as if every 100 pages there was something revealed that was not expected. It's one of the things that contributes to the heart rate raise.

Shadow of Doubt was told from numerous perspectives but prominently from Cappy and Michele's. I certainly recommend Shadow of Doubt to those who love a good heart pounding romance.

button excerpt FOR SHADOW OF DOUBT

Michelle paced the length of the room for the thousandth time. There were exactly eighteen steps from the bathroom door to the sad excuse of a table. Not the biggest rooms here at the OTE.
A long moan drifted through the left wall followed by a slam, then rhythmic banging.
“Oh, God. Yes,” a woman cried. “Give it to me, daddy.”
Whomp. Whomp. Whomp. The cheap picture over the bed rattled with “daddy’s” frantic pace.
Michelle rolled her eyes to the ceiling. “Really?” she asked the stained tiles. As if her situation wasn’t bad enough, she now had to listen to a bad porno.
She glanced at the clock. 5:22 p.m.
Her fingertips felt cold. She went to rub her hands together only to find her palms had a thin layer of sweat. How messed up was that? Darn nerves.
For years she had fantasized about this moment. So many versions ranging from innocent to completely far-fetched had captivated her dreams. Only Fate would deliver the version where she was holed up in a seedy motel with Big Daddy providing the sleazy soundtrack.
“Yes! Right there! Harder!”
She tuned out the “Oh-Gods,” and the “That’s-the-spots” and replayed her favorite fantasy. The one where Captain Jeremy Malone sought her out only to find out she had been given a new identity and placed in Witness Protection. Devastated by the government’s unwillingness to tell him where she had been relocated, he made it his personal mission to find her. Though it took years, he finally discovered she became a park ranger in Indianapolis. He immediately requested leave from the military and showed up at her apartment door.
She laughed at her foolish daydreams. Even if the man had hunted her down, then what? Her track record since Colombia had been Michelle, zero; Disaster, every time.
The looks of disgust on her partners’ faces when they saw her body usually killed whatever passion she had been able to muster through the fear and memories. Only one man had seen beyond carnage and made her feel as if it would be okay.
A hoarse shout bled through the thin wall followed by a lot of groaning. Hopefully that signaled the end of “daddy’s” session.
Had she done the right thing calling Cappy? How long had he been in Indianapolis? God, had she been this close to him all this time? What if he’s seen the news? Would he call the police, FBI, Army to tip them off? She started to panic. Oh no. What had she done?
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Michelle jumped at the sound on her door. The blood drained from her face and her heart pounded against her ribcage. No way in this short span of time could it be another drunk with the wrong room. Which meant . . . He’s here. All her insecurities rushed through her brain as she stared at the door. Everything from her thunder-thighs to her lack of makeup and hungover status swamped her.
“Michelle?” a muffled, deep male voice called on the other side. She’d know that intonation anywhere. It slid over her, tightening the knot in her stomach. She rubbed the dancing area and snagged on a button. Jerking her head down, she started cussing. She still had on the ugliest uniform ever. Not one ounce of sexiness could be wrung from the drab olive and gray clothing.
Sweat pooled under her arms, not helping her confidence and—
Wait, what was that? She squinted and dabbed a spot on her shirt. Great. She had on the most god-awful stained uniform ever.
This was so far from her fantasy she could only hang her head. About par for the last twenty-four hours.
Knock. Knock.
“Michelle,” Captain Jeremy Malone said again. “It’s safe to open the door.”
No one shouted “POLICE” or “FBI.” That was a good sign, wasn’t it? Didn’t they have to identify themselves first before entering? That meant he was alone, right?
She threw her shoulders back and strode across the room. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and opened the thin wood.
Holy Cheesus on wheat toast.
How could she not recall how HUGE he was? And that was saying something, since she was considered tall. But he had to be at least a half a foot over her head. Not only tall, but ripped with muscles . . . Like no-way-could-this-exist-in-real-life muscles sprouted beneath a tight T-shirt. Since he had worn a helmet the last time they met, she had never gotten to see he had dark brown hair, buzzed in a military crew-cut. His stance was all business; exuding strength and power and don’t-mess-with-me-cause-I-know-eighty-ways-to-kill-you. But one feature commanded her attention—the same one haunting her for years. His eyes. Those wonderfully expressive deep coffee-colored eyes.
“Cappy.” She shuddered. After so many years of longing, she was finally staring into their depths . . . and he was staring right back.

Underground Serial by Cassandra Carr

Underground Serial
by Cassandra Carr
Genre: Black Ops/Military, Action, Suspense

Off the Grid, Underground 1- The seemingly impossible has happened. The unthinkable. Those I trusted most have betrayed me. I’m a hockey player, and gave control of my finances to my parents so I could concentrate on my game. Big mistake. They stole from me, bankrupted me, in fact. And then someone come looking for money I don’t have and I made a terrible mistake; one that will haunt me forever.
But now someone has found me and offered a new start. I would no longer be a hockey player, I wouldn’t even be an actual person, totally off the grid. I’d be a shadow, fighting crime for an organization that’s underground, literally. Do I want that life?
If I go back, what kind of life would I have? Probably one in prison orange. The choice to join Underground is painful, but necessary. As my hockey coach always said, though, pain is weakness leaving the body. I will not be powerless ever again.

Creating Slapshot:
I’ve left my old life behind and officially joined Underground. It appears no one knows where I am or even if I’m still alive. I don’t know how I feel about that. My friends thinking I’m dead leaves a hole in my heart, but I’ll drive myself crazy if I obsess about it. So rather than allowing myself to wallow in self-pity or anger about what’s happened, I’m throwing all my energy into training. You would think that whole “elite athlete” thing would make everything easier, but all these new techniques I need to master—hand-to-hand combat, weapons training, surveillance procedures—are kicking my ass.
For my whole life, I’ve only had one identity. Ethan, hockey player. Now that sense of self is gone forever, slowly being replaced by my new identity, Slapshot. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe this transformation. But the more I find out about the world around me, the problems I ignored for the most part as I played a game for an obscene amount of money, the more I want to make a difference. This is not a game. It’s real life, and I have the chance to be a hero. It’s going to take everything I have—or have left, to do it.

Blurb for Underground Serial- Follow this 10-part serial throughout 2015 featuring Ethan, aka Slapshot, a hockey player whose life is ruined, forcing him to disappear forever. Ethan joins Underground, a black ops organization and is trained as a deadly operative. There, he meets Ciana, a woman with a dark past of her own. As Ethan and his Underground colleagues embark on dangerous missions worldwide, he finds a new purpose in life. But will his former problems come back to haunt him?

Review:

So I'm going to talk about these serials as if they were released in one book, otherwise there would probably be a lot of repetition or extremely short reviews. So I was actually shocked to find I enjoyed the serials part of it. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if it was one book but the serials give the author a unique chance. And they can use it or not. And so I was actually pleasantly surprised to discover that serials weren't all that bad.

Now that I've got that out of the way, I have to say that Ethan and the rest of the Underground group were very likable. Each has their history, and their strengths just as they have weaknesses. While you don't get a whole lot on the Underground group, you do learn a lot about Ethan and he's really down on his luck. Which just makes me cheer for him that much harder.

The plot itself was an interesting concept, and one that kept my attention as Ethan gets more and more involved.

Overall the Underground serials by Cassandra Carr are really good and something that would be good to read if you enjoy serials.

Hunter by Mandy Harbin

Hunter (The Bang Shift Series)
By Mandy Harbin
Genre: Military, Romantic Suspense

After finally getting out of her disastrous relationship, Maya Carmichael has sworn off all bad boys. Sure they’re hot. The attitude? No thanks. But when her car is vandalized while on a night out with her roommate, she realizes her ex is truly sadistic. Her friend insists they lay low for a few days while the cops do their thing. Unfortunately her temporary haven will throw her in the path of another bad boy. Oh, she’s heard stories about her roommate’s brother, Hunter, and he’s just the type she wants to avoid. Until she sees him … and all good intentions fly out of her busted windshield.

Hunter Anderson might be the easygoing jokester within the Bang Shift crew—the small Arkansas town’s mechanics and the government’s secret mercenaries—but underneath his lighthearted exterior lurks demons of a past he’d love nothing more than to forget. Working on cars and taking the occasional contracted mission help, but he fears nothing will stop his past from coming back to haunt him. No one has tried penetrating the façade to get to the real person below. No one, until Maya.

The attraction is undeniable, but there’s more to Hunter than he can ever let on, and for Maya, this hot distraction makes it easy to forget the real danger she’s in. It has nothing to do with losing her heart to him.

When really it has everything to do with just that.

Review:

Hunter lives up to the first book in the Bang Shift Series. It involved action, but it wasn't constantly going on and sometimes it didn't even have to do with the bad guys. There's also the fact that there were some interesting connections that I didn't understand until they were explained and there were numerous connections made during the book that will be interesting to see play out in further books. They gave you something to whet your appetite and it definitely makes you crave more.

That being said the story and characters of Hunter and Maya were beautifully done. There were flaws, they were far from perfect, and that was clear in their interactions and thoughts. They struggled just as we do but they also had the additional difficulty of the main plot of the book to deal with as well as trying to resist one another.

If you enjoyed Brody, then you will certainly love to read Hunter and look forward to further books in the series. And if you haven't read either book, you should certainly give them a look!

Review:

Alright, so if you didn't know already For Adriano is the third book in the Chicago Syndicate Series. But at the same time I didn't feel like I was lost at all because we get a quick gloss over the main points. So we know generalities and will have to go back and read those books to find specifics. Which sounds like an interesting time. There are also flashbacks so that we can see their meeting and relationship before the present which also helps keep things straight and feel a little less lost. Although there were still lots of questions about Luca and Fallon specifically.

The writing was certainly interesting as was the plot. I really enjoyed the character dynamics and the interactions. I'm not quite sure how to describe it but they were really well developed and they kept you on your toes. The same goes for the plot. There never seemed to be a really slow moment, or if there was they didn't last very long.

The book was well-written, the plot full of intrigue and it was certainly a good read.

EXCERPT
Adriano’s point of view
As I climb the stairs to the strip club of the
Syndicate’s three-story headquarters, located alongside the North Shore of
Chicago’s suburbs, I already recognize voices coming from the room at the end
of the hall.
I’m greeted by Luca and James who are in the middle of
the room beside the rounded burgundy sofa. I nod to both of them and fix my
focus on the unknown woman with an attractive bob standing next to James. I’m
usually not a fan of women with short hair, but who is this delectable
creature?
James takes his cue to introduce us. “Adriano, meet
Camilla. She’ll be working here at the club from now on.”
Why did he suddenly
hire someone new? We’re not understaffed.
I can’t help but stare at her. My god, her legs go on
forever; she’s just a bit shorter than I am, and I’m over six feet tall. I
inspect her body slowly, like no one is watching, and when I reach her face,
I’m pleasantly stunned that she’s challenging me with an arc of her perfectly
shaped eyebrow. Her eyes are deep brown, heavily lashed, and slightly tilted up
at the corners. Her cheeks are delicately boned. She looks absolutely
appetizing in a tight, black knee-length dress. Sexy, yet not too revealing. In
other words, she’s smokin’ hot!
“Camilla, nice to meet you.” I go old-school, take her
hand in mine, and kiss her knuckles.
Luca hides an eye-roll, but I catch it and grin.
“Adriano,” she says huskily.
Her voice is hoarse. Hoarse in the sexiest way I’ve
ever encountered. I didn’t expect that sensual voice to accompany this striking
woman that smells like vanilla. With her, my obsession for vanilla ignited.
“Welcome to our little establishment.” Then I address
James while holding on to her hand, “What will she be doing here?”
“Bartending,” James answers.
“Then I better show her the ropes.” I let the pad of
my thumb swirl over her fingers, and she shivers noticeably; she’s not immune
to my charms.
And I guide this interesting woman with me to the bar,
which is a stainless steel and black granite area that’s open at each end and
set up like a juice bar.
She speaks before we step behind it. “I can make
drinks.”
Her simple statement has me confused.
“You look like you don’t believe I can tend the bar,”
she elaborates.
Oh no, sweetheart, I’m
not doubting your qualifications. I’m just staggered by the sex vibes you’re
throwing around with that voice and those gorgeous lean legs.
I smirk while extending my hand, inviting her behind
the bar. “No, I believe you.”
That was the first night I tried to get Cam into my
bed. I failed that night and for over three months after and almost gave up my
chase, but it was too much fun to try to capture her.
I don’t even think she liked me at first.
