Just Whistle by Hannah Rae!

She's running from her past... but fearful of her future.

At the age of eighteen, Charley Lane fled the small town of Lake Caywood, Pennsylvania. She left behind a grandfather who loved her dearly and a young boy who counted on her for all the things his mother couldn't give him.

Now, ten years later, Charley finds herself revisiting her hometown in order to attend her grandfather's funeral, once again staying in her childhood home of an old farmhouse with ever-changing rooms. Charley's uncertain as to whether her return is temporary or permanent; she struggles to blend her past, present, and future. What Charley does know, however, is that she has already hurt people, and although she doesn't want to, she also knows that she is bound to hurt again.

I'm going to apologize in advance for any spelling errors or crazy gifs or anything of the sort. But I still have tears pouring down my face and my thoughts are bouncing around crazily. And maybe that's a good thing. Because this book truly is a must read, even if it hurts. It's one of those things that while it hurts you also feel better for having read it.

Within the first hundred pages you know that something is wrong with Charley and that you won't have an HEA, just by the little clues that are being dropped. But by that time, the characters have become much like friends and you can't just bring yourself to let them know even if you know it will lead to heartbreak.

The beautiful moments that were experienced in this moment. Just wow, that was amazing. And the writing in general, the ways we were introduced to characters, the plotline, and again those small hints that add up to this one terrible outcome.

I'm sorry, but I literally don't think I can say anything more than the fact that this is an amazing book ,and even though you'll experience pain it is so worth it!

I was left with a guilty conscience, a pile of mistakes, and little else. I take care of JULIA GENTRY, my brother’s widow and the love of my life, and their daughter. Excerpt

“She’s been missing him a lot lately.”

Julia’s voice is barely a whisper and my chest constricts. Our conversations don’t normally make it to discussing Gage unless we’re already arguing. The fact that she just brought it up shocks me and I’m not comfortable with it. I don’t know how to take it. I feel my jaw pulse with frustration and scramble to change the subject again. “Why is it so chilly in here?”

Her smile disappears and she tugs her sweatshirt nervously. “I didn’t know it was.”

“How can you possibly not know?” I start to the thermostat across the room when she clears her throat.

“The heater isn’t working right. I asked Lane to come by and look at it earlier this week.”

“And he hasn’t been here yet?” I shoot her a look and she shakes her head. “He’ll be here tonight.” I dig my cell outta my pocket.

“Crew, don’t. Please. The last time you called my landlord he was a complete jerk to me for a couple of months. I just got on good terms with him again.”

I scroll through my contacts list, looking for his name.

“Crew ...” I know her doe-eyes are pleading with me. I also know if I look up at her, I’ll be somewhat inclined to give in. So I don’t.

The Definition of Icing by Aven Ellis!

(Image found on Goodreads)

Kenley is finally on the road to her dream. She's recently opened her own business, Confection Consultants. She decides to focus on work, ignoring men. That is until Dallas Demons hockey player, Nate comes along and helps her out of a frustrating situation. But Nate has had his heart broken and isn't sure he's ready for a relationship. Will Kenley and Nate overcome their hang-ups together? Find the official description on Goodreads.

Aven definitely tackles the stereotype issue in this book. Kenley is a beautiful and the way she looks affects the way she tends to be viewed. I really enjoy how Aven brought up and dealt with this issue. It was marvelous to watch how the situation was dealt with and that Kenley was willing to throw away an amazing opportunity because of it.

Kylie and Harrison make an appearance, and I loved the update on their life together!

I also laughed my butt off at certain scenes. This book is light and happy for the most part with occasional angst thrown in.

It didn't take me long to finish this book! I couldn't and didn't put it down except for food, and drink breaks as well as some cat interruptions.

Aven Ellis creates characters that you quickly fall in love with!

Relent by Nina Levine

Evie Bishop grew up loving Kick Hanson. He loved her, too. They were inseparable. Best friends who looked out for each other. Until the day scandal hit their families and ripped everything apart, changing the course of all their lives.

Kick follows a dangerous path that leads him to the Storm MC where he spends his days buried deep in a violent and lawless world that is slowly consuming his soul. Evie works hard to escape the hopelessness that threatens to swallow her after her family is ripped apart. She builds a stable life for herself, however it's devoid of the one thing she has always longed for - Kick.

The love these two have for each other never wavers but sometimes in life, love isn't enough. Even in the times they find each other again, they can never make it work. Kick fights against bringing Evie into his world and Evie refuses a life with Kick if he won't fully commit to her. However, when circumstance throws them together again, Kick knows he must finally make her his. The trouble is, Evie's done. She loves him but she believes their chance to be together has long passed.

When Kick finally stakes his claim, will Evie relent and give their love another go, or has Kick left it too long to go after the woman who has owned his heart forever?

REVIEW:

Oh my goodness. I`m gushing so be prepared. Nina Levine has created an amazing book. The writing was as usual great. But Relent went above and beyond. This book went so deep that I am surprised I didn`t highlight most of the book. It was jut one of those books.

Evie and Kick were both characters with baggage and it shows. It also shows the difficulties they had growing up. Overall Kick and Evie and the rest of the Sydney Storm boys might have just overtaken the original Storm boys. And I thought that would have been a very difficult thing to do.

The book does leave some things open but it also ends the book in a way to let you know that this book is finished. And that`s good. Cliffhangers are great but sometimes you just need a story that can continue but it`s also got a definitive end. I`m not sure if I really described that well but oh well.

Relent was amazing and I can`t wait for more of the Sydney Storm Boys!

Boarded By Love by Toni Aleo

(Image found on Goodreads)
"You know, everyone always talks about sparks and fireworks when they kiss a guy - I hadn't ever felt that before, but I do now." -Toni Aleo, Boarded by Love

Jude Sinclair is captain of the Bellevue Bullies hockey team. And a bit of a playboy. But everything changes when he runs into Claire Anderson. But Claire's had a difficult time growing up. She's determined to stand on her own two feet, no matter what. Will Claire's secret destroy the best thing that's ever happened to both Jude and Claire? Or will forgiveness and love come into play, saving the day? Find the official description on Goodreads.

First of all, if you're just tuning in, I love all of Toni Aleo's work. She writes some great books and I especially love her Assassin's series. So when I found out about Boarded By Love I was ecstatic. Especially because it involves Claire from Breaking Away.

In Boarded By Love, we get a much more intensive look into Claire's life before Phillip and Reese. Not to mention we find out just how much she changed when she came to live with Phillip. We knew the basics on what had happened from Breaking Away but we were able to get more details and learn more about why Claire was doing what she was doing and how it affected her. I loved that deeper look into her character. Next time I read Breaking Away, I'll definitely feel even more sympathy than I did last time. Claire was an amazing character and I really feel that Toni Aleo portrayed her very realistically.

The same could be said for Jude, although he is way too sweet to be a reformed player, just saying. In fact Jude almost overtook Tate at times during this book, and we all know my love for all things Tate Odder.

We can't forget the hockey. I was really excited to see more hockey, although it didn't play a big part in Boarded By Love. It was great to see when it came into play though.

And readers were also given texts that the characters sent to one another. It's a different style of writing and it shakes things up. But some of the things that were said were so sweet that you could melt from them and it really added to the book.

Also getting to see and get updated about our favorite characters was amazing! We got to see them in a bit of a different light. That of a protective father/uncles. It made for some hilarious moments, although I wanted to smack Phillip because he was acting really childish. But it was great to see how far he's come from the inappropriate player we first met. He's really grown some and I love seeing that. Although he's still got some of his former traits.

The epilogue gave readers more assurance that everything works out and it was just an amazing scene, really powerful. I loved it!

Boarded By Love is such an amazing book, and I'm excited to see more of the Bellevue Bullies as well as the Assassin's.

Delay of Game by Catherine Gayle

(Image found on Goodreads)
“For me, it’s all or nothing. I can’t half-ass this. If we do this, I will pursue you like no man has ever pursued you before. And even after I’ve caught you, I plan to continue pursuing you like my life depends on it. If you’re not prepared for that, if you’re not ready to be treated as something special and treasured and precious, then I need you to roll over, go back to sleep, and pretend none of this ever happened.” -Catherine Gayle, Delay of Game

WARNING: This book contains mature content. Not meant for younger readers.

Sara is scared. She’s trying to protect her father, and keep him healthy and so she keeps her pregnancy a secret. And yet when Cam “Jonny” Johnson protects his team and earns a ten game suspension that throws everything out of the window. Cam feels guilty and tries to put things right but with Sara and Cam attracted to each other, it definitely makes things harder to keep from touching her. And yet Sara will do anything to keep them apart. Cam’s got to be quick on his feet or he’ll lose it all. Find the official description on Goodreads.

I was so excited to receive a copy of Delay of Game to review. If you haven’t already seen my reviews of the previous three books than you should give them a peek! The Portland Storm Series book reviews and here’s my review of Taking A Shot, a novella in the series. And yes, that is a bit of a longer quote than I would normally use,  but seriously, read that and tell me that it doesn’t make you want to sigh and pull out the ice cream because you don’t have a man like that. Or sigh and be thankful that you have a man like that. Either or.

While we’ve met both Cam and Sara in previous books, we also haven’t gotten to go as in depth with their personalities as we do in Delay of Game. I was definitely in love with Cam(and don’t hate me but he even overtook my love of Babs for like half a chapter! But no worries, my Babs love came back and overtook him again) because he was such a sweetheart and he was definitely stubborn enough to win Sara over. Plus he has Buster, who more than once served up an adorable moment. And then Sara. Well I felt bad for her situation, there were also several moments where I wanted to smack. Sure, she hasn’t had the best track record but some of that was her running them off and I felt like she was letting her fear talk. Which made for a very realistically portrayed character but also someone who frustrates the reader at times.

And we can’t forget that we do get some Babs time. And this time, he starts growing into a bit of a leadership role, at least momentarily. And that was great to watch. I feel that in one scene if I wasn’t at work on break I would have been cheering out loud. Yes, I can’t resist Babs. Read this series and see if you could resist talking about him. It's impossible I tell you!

At the same time as all of this was going on, readers are emotionally drawn into the book. Sara’s emotions were everywhere at points in this book and I felt everything she felt as well as Cam’s emotions. It was eye opening and definitely made me appreciate what I have even more than I did before.

Then there was also the feeling of the team. There was just this sense of family, even for players that we haven’t gotten to see more than a couple times or heard of. It just made it seem as if everything was a big, happy family and they would be there to support each other through anything. If someone were to get traded I might just cry a whole lot. That’s how connected you felt to that family throughout the book.

Delay of Game was an amazing addition to the Portland Storm series, and I can’t wait to get more! Delay of Game was released August 16th, and I strongly suggest you give it and the rest of the Portland Storm series a chance! I assure you, you’ll fall in love quickly.

TEASER

Moving towards him, I say, “I like your tattoos.”

His eyes don’t leave mine as he says, “Thanks, I did some of them, but it’s hard to tattoo yourself.”

“Oh cool, so you’re a tattoo artist?”

“Yup, the best in town.”

I smile as I lean into the bar. “Wow! I’m going to go get my first one tonight.”

“I know. You are coming to my shop. That’s why I’m here. I came to pick ya up.”

His eyes are dancing with mischief, and I can’t help but love being under his gaze. He makes me feel tingly all over, and I like him—he is intoxicating. “You lie.”

“Never! I wouldn’t do such a thing. Not to such a looker of a lady.”

I eye him, a grin playing on my lips, as I say, “You’re a total flirt.”

“Oh sure, I am, and you like it. You do; I can tell.”

I shrug. “Maybe.”

“No maybe about it. I know you do. By the end of the night, I’ll have your number and my artwork will be on your skin.”

I love his confidence, and I especially love the way he is looking deep in my eyes as he grins. I like the color of his eyes too. They aren’t your normal light blue. No, they are dark, almost purplish, and they have me gasping as I get lost in the depths of them. I can’t help but feel drawn to him, and I know he is bound to be a fun time.

“Sure, why not.”

“Atta girl!” he yells as he stands up, smacking his hands together. He leans against the bar, taking my face in his hand before laying a loud, smacking kiss on my lips. It happens so fast that when he pulls away, his eyes boring into mine, I don’t know what to do, but I do know that my lips are tingling from the quick feel of his. His eyes are darker, his smile beaming, and I have to smile back, instead of smacking him upside his head, as I would have done to any other guy that would kiss me without even taking me to dinner first.

“By the way, the name’s Casey Burke.”

“Amberlyn Reilly.”

His grin grows as his gaze drops to my lips. My heart bangs against my ribs and I swear he is going to kiss me again, but instead, he says, “A beautiful name for a beautiful girl.”

Oh, he is good. Butterflies are fluttering in my stomach as he holds my gaze. I thought tonight I was going to only mark off the do something drastic by getting my tattoo, but I am beginning to think that I might be able to mark off take a risk too.
Because Casey Burke is a walking risk.

One I want to take.
